Post Media Player 9

I saw that MS has made Media Player 9 available for download and it includes new codecs....has anyone tried this yet? I don't want to screw up my SnapStream.

Quote:
Windows Media Player 9 in Conjunction with "Corona" dramatically improves Internet streaming by introducing Fast Stream, which gives an instant-on, always-on experience, bringing home-theater-like audio and video quality to broadband PC users. "Corona" is poised to lead the third generation of streaming on the Web, which includes broadcast-quality experiences for end users and enhanced profitability for the entire digital media ecosystem.

"Corona" introduces two new professional level audio and video codecs. The new Windows Media Audio Professional is the first codec to enable Web-based delivery of 6-channel surround sound with full-spectrum, full-resolution audio (24 bit/96 kHz sampling).

A new version of the Windows Media Video codec provides a 20 percent efficiency boost compared with the previous version and now introduces the ability to provide HDTV-like video quality at file sizes half that of today’s DVDs, for local playback on the PC.

Whats new :
WMA/WMV 9 encoding
Advanced editing of media properties
A slightly revamped UI
DVD ripping
Support for VCD playback, and some new playback controls
Two new plug-ins: Audio Normalize, Audio Crossfade
Minimizes to task bar player.

Well, I've got it.....so I guess I'll just have to try it myself.....perhaps I've got a beta build but I installed it on another PC just to check it out.

I agree with Jason. WMP8 for WinXP is the most recent release. Corona does not yet appear to be available to the public.

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/p...nchDatePR.asp: "Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates will launch the public beta release of the entire Windows Media 9 Series platform in Los Angeles at the Hollywood and Highlands Complex on Wednesday, Sept. 4."

Can you check the Help page for what you got to confirm what it is? If it is version 9, I, and probably others, would be interested in seeing the url for it.

I installed Media Player 9 beta for fun. I thought everything was ok until the end of my first snapsteam recording. As soon as SnapStream is done recording a show it crashes with the following message:

ssd has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. (ect ect ect) (Send Error Report button)

There was more info but this form wont let me paste it because it thinks its HTML tags. Something about asfchop.exe and DLL's

The file is recorded, but is called index.wmv after the crash (never renamed in time) I've varified its a repeatable problem. I'm going to system restore back to before. I just thought I'd share this so you can look into it before it's released.

I also noticed that Movie Maker doesnt let me save anything I edit either. (it says "An error has occured")

There is a link to it in the Dev group.

Keep in mind that it is an OLD beta of it though. It isn't exactly like what you are going to see come Sept 4.

Might be fun to play with though.

how do you uninstall it after this mess up? I don't see it listed under add/remove programs.

Sigh,

Julia use System Restore. Look for a restore point before you installed Media player have the computer do what it does and on the reboot you never installed it . Gotta love XP.

I ended up doing a repair from the boot cdrom... Fought with sound and video drivers after that, I still don't have the video working quite right, if I reboot with the newer drivers I get the pretty blue screen.

I hope you didn't do that because of my suggestion. If you go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore you will see that Windows XP makes backups of your settings ever few days and every time you install a program. All you have to do is pick a point where you system was working correctly and then system restore will reset those settings.

I don't know if you can use it since you did a system repair from the boot disk. That would have been a last resort. Try booting into safe mode and see if you can still do a system restore.

5 hours and 55 reboots and everything works again, not to mention playing DVD's in Media Player doesn't cause the system to crash any more. So I guess in the long run it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Yes, I saw it, and was going to edit my post, but my connection died, so...

Julia, what OS do you have on your system?

XP I hope since Media Player 9 should only work with XP. Same for Media Player 8.

I have XP Pro on the box... Media Player 9 beta was a disaster.

Actually, media player 9 will be available for other OS's other than WinXP. There will be a Win2000 version and Win9X (unlike Media Player 8).
