Accessing web admin page via port 8129 from Internet: has anyone gotten this to work?

Hi, I can access BTV's web admin page from my LAN via my D-link DI-624 router but have not been able to get to it from the outside/Internet.

I have my D-Link set up with my dyndns account. My ISP is Verizon DSL.
The IP address listed on my dyndns account is currently the IP address I'm using to connect via Verizon (i.e., up to date). It looks like the D-link router has been properly updating my IP address on my dyndns account.

Is there anything I need to set up on my router in particular to let me get to BTV's web admin page from the Internet?

If this is about scheduling recordings, you could do that via snapstream.net. The dyndns service may need some time to trigger the update of the dns. You can easily verify that by uisng the dynamic IP instead of the hostname. Did you enable port-forwarding on your router?

In general one would stay away from stuff like that. Webserver are very easy to write, but a lot tougher to implement sufficiently secure. I don't know anything about the BTV webserver (besides that even 1774 is still slower than my grandma), you don't either.

The bottom line is: If you care about the security of your box (and ya fellow netizens) you don't want to open port 80 something, unless you really know what you are doing.

Hi Flavius,

You're right about security, but since the snapstream.net only works for the states and Canada users, this leaves the rest of the world in the cold... I already asked the developers but I have not heard any positive news on this for us living outside the US.

If this could be made possible for us, this would be a great advantage again...

(hoping anyone reads this and decides to implement this ....)

Re: Accessing web admin page via port 8129 from Internet: has anyone gotten this to work?

I'm not familiar with D-Link's router admin, but here's how to do it from a Linksys router. The concept is the same. Basically you need to use port forwarding to forward port 8129 (default web admin port) to your BTV box. Then you need to access it using your router's WAN IP address (http:wan-ip:8129), not your LAN IP.

1. Open the router's configuration screen in your brower. The manual will tell you how. Basically type in the router's IP.
2. Go to the Advanced tab at the right
3. Click the Forwarding tab
4. Enter the port range you want to forward (8129-8129 for web admin, 1755-1755 for streaming recorded content, and 8080 to stream LiveTV).
5. Enter the IP address of the PC you want to forward these port requests to (use the LAN IP of your BTV box).
6. Click Apply.

Hopefully this helps.

Slightly off topic - if you need to access your PC from the internet you might ant to run a VNC server like http://www.tighvnc.com. An even easier option is http://www.logmein.com.

I was surprised how well these things work, even over slow (dial-up) connections.

Peter, I set mine up on a DLINK router. It's not bad at all, just follow BTVfreak's directions. The logic is, you've got to accept the request on the DLINK and get it to the BTV computer, which requires port forwarding. As far as I know, Verizon does block some ports so you may have to receive the external request on a common port that the router will forward to BTV:8129.

Hi, everyone, thanks for the suggestions. I was able to get it to work by using Virtual Server (D-link's name for Port Forwarding).

anyone get this working on an SMC router? It's not really that confusing, but I can't seem to do it correctly, after a few tries...

Another quick thing to try if you haven't gotten it already is:

Ensure you use this format:

http://xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:PPPP/default.aspx

where x is your ip address on the web.

PPPP is the port number you are running on, and this port number should be forwarded through your router as well.

Don't forget the default.aspx. Don't ask me why but within a LAN I don't need to use that; however, if linking from an outside source you have to add default.aspx to get this to work. Well at least I do.
