Possible to run website and SS?
I recently decided to host a website and installed IIS and got it up without a hitch. But now I can not connect to the web interface from SS. Only if I am on my local network and use the UNC name with :8129...
Externally no worky... I turned off the bind to port 80 option, but still no dice from the web. Is this a known issue? |

I'm not aware of any issues w/IIS and BTV.
I can tell you that if you're running IIS and a website on port 80 there's no reason it should effect something running on port 8129. BTV doesn't even use IIS. I don't have IIS installed on my machine so BTV must use their own hoegrown web server. I can also tell you that I've installed IIS on several machines in the past for software that I use and I run the server on multiple ports(80 as well as 81). |

Oh. I didn't see the lart that you can connect internally but not externally. That would tell you it's working and there's a problem w/your router and like was mentioned previously make sure you haev port forwarding set up if you have a router. Also, some ISP's don't allow web servers to be run and block port 80. You can get around it by running your server on another port like how BTV is running on 8129 but if your ISP is scanning all of the machines on their network looking for users runnign servers on known ports(like Comcast who scans daily) you may get a notice telling you turn it off or get cancelled.

I have a website and btv running on the same machine… what port are you trying to run your website on (the default 80?)? If you are running the website on 80 then you will need to turn off btv’s “port forwarder” because it will be attempting to catch the requests on port 80 also and that could make things behave weirdly (or probably not work at all, cause I think IIS will complain).
So if you have these ports (http://kb.snapstream.com/Kb.aspx?kbid=1026) open on your router then you should be able to turn off btv’s port forwarder and http://external-ip:8129 and get to your btv page. |

Thanks Jkoon I will verify tonight, but I am thinking it was 80. Also I dont have ports "open" so to speak. I am using NAT to redirect the ports i want to the machine i want. Right now I know I have at least 8129 and 80 redirected to the SS machine. Also, I turned off BTV's port forwarder I think, its the one in configuration. I even rebooted the pc after this. I wonder if I needed to do so before installing IIS.
I might be missing one of the ports, because I thought I only needed 8129 and 8080, but I'll see tonight. Can i change the website's port? I thought about redirecting 80 traffice through NAT to a private port internally but havent tried this yet. Is that what you do? |

ok this is completely off what I asked, but it might answer my question... How do you run your site on a different port? To people visiting it have to specify the port? Or do you handle that in the DNS record?
IE; www.msn.com:9999 ? |

I use dns to do the work, basically I am signed up for two addresses at no-ip.com so the users type address1.no-ip.com which will then point at address2.no-ip.com:12300 which points to the actual ip (and port number) of my machine.

I actually use godaddy.com but think i might be able to do the same in one less step?
Look at the attachment... the xx.xx.xx.xx is my ipaddress now. It takes the domain and points it there. If I change that to be xx.xx.xx.xx:12300 then it will work the same correct? Or are you using forwarding instead? Thanks for all the info, very informative. Last edited by timbiotic; 04-19-2004 at 02:57 PM. |
