BTV stops recording after only a few minutes, locks up completely after an hour

I've already submitted this one to official support, but I thought I would try here too...

I'm installing BTV for some friends (a good deal... I get free room-and-board for the week I'm here :-), but I have run into a problem that I have never encountered before.

Everything installs smoothly, and it appears to work. However, a few minutes after starting a scheduled recording, the temp recording file stops getting any bigger. At the same time, debugview shows the following messages:

00000097 38.16285953 [996] Retraining down to 30 fps.
00000098 43.15728675 [996] Retraining down to 24 fps.
00000099 48.16287992 [996] Retraining down to 20 fps.
00000100 53.16837838 [996] Retraining down to 15 fps.
00000101 58.17386204 [996] Retraining down to 12 fps.
00000102 63.23952234 [996] Retraining down to 8 fps.
00000103 68.18501877 [996] Retraining down to 6 fps.
00000104 73.19052505 [996] Retraining down to 3 fps.

BTV remains responsive during this. All FSUI functions and Web Admin functions seem to work. I can even view Live TV. However, at the end of the scheduled recording (for example, 30 minutes for a 30-minute show that was being recorded), BTV just locks up, and I have to kill the process from the task manager. The last lines in the BTV log file are:

[4/5/2004 19:02:29] Started the recording 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' successfully.
[4/5/2004 20:00:01] Dispatcher stopped the recording: the recording has completed.
[4/5/2004 20:00:01] Stopped the Windows Media recording 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' successfully.
[4/5/2004 20:00:03] Postprocessing of file: J:\Video\sstemp.wmv successfully submitted to the BatchProcessor
[4/5/2004 20:00:04] Halting the recording engine.
[4/5/2004 20:00:04] Indexing of J:\Video\sstemp.wmv completed.
[4/5/2004 20:00:06] Tagging of J:\Video\sstemp.wmv completed.
[4/5/2004 20:00:15] Show Monitor: found new show Star Trek Deep Space Nine-(The Passenger)-2004-04-05-0.wmv in J:\Video.
[4/5/2004 20:02:01] get_RecordStatus failed to get a response

The system is a 1.4GHz Celeron, Win2K, and a Hauppaugge WinTV FM capture card. The problem happens with both WMV and MPEG recordings.

Watching live TV works great. Video playback works great. I just can't record anything!

Any ideas? Log files are attached.

thanks...

You are not alone... at least with the get_RecordStatus failed error.

My long time stable *dedicated* BTV box just decided to have this error. The recent (e.g. months) was upgrading the CPU from 2100+ to 2400+ and the usual Windows Update critical fixes.

Now I cannot reliablely record. BTV just doesn't work right.

I've submitted two e-mails for support but no response.

I've uninstalled 3.43 (partial..kept config) upgraded to 3.44 and get_RecordStatus is gone but now I have BTV locking up or if it does record a show it does it with stutter. And unfortunately I don't have the 3.43 install anymore to even try to revert back to it and it isn't available for download anymore.

I've ran Hauppauges Hwclear util and re-installed the wdm335 (win2k pro) drivers... no change.

Based on what I'm reading in the forums I have two options. Buy a PVR 250 card which seems to run better not suprisingly or reformat my drive and start from scratch and pray this doesn't happen again.

I'm baffled that my dedicated system just all of a sudden developed this problem. I'm also baffled that such a severe problem that many others have encountered over the last couple of months hasn't been fixed. Reformat and start from scratch just isn't right as said in other threads. I shouldn't be forced into buying a PVR 250 either.

Well.. now get_recordstatus has returned under 3.44.

Hoping to download beta 3.5 soon.
