Divx Encoding

Hi i've been experimenting with divx recompression this week and have been having some trouble. i noticed my divx's where short usually 15 minutes to 30 minutes only got recompressed, so searching the forums and the knowledge base i found the fix to that, now i'm not sure if it worked (waiting for a manual recompression to finish). Now last night before i went to bed i setup a batch recompression of 4 shows and checked it to find an Encore Assertion Failed error and the ssbatchprocessorservice.exe crashed. The first recompression was still going 12 hours later so i killed it (think it got stuck in a loop or something).

Been reading the forums and particulary peenesh shah's post's
and i'm unsure if there's a fix for the Encore Assertion Failed error in snapstream 3.3 build 714? Also don't know if anyone can answer this but does the newest 3.4 beta fix these problems?

(Update: My manual recompress that i tried this afternoon failed with the Encore Assertion Failed error after about half an hour of recompressing)

I'd really like to use divx for recompression

On a side note if i ever get the divx recompression working what're some good quality settings?

I gave up on divx recompression in BTV and went back to windows media at least it encodes. I've tried to get the Divx to work on no less than 5 machines that I own not one would finish a job without error. I applied all fixes clean installs all a no go.

this is really to bad. i'm glad i have a terabyte of storage space but i sure would like to convert the series i'm collecting to divx. and i'm not really keen on plunking down some more money on a separate program to recompress to divx. I guess i'll end up waiting for 3.4 and seeing if that supports internal divx recompression better.

First, that is the worst sig...ever.

Second, I have never had a problem with any Divx stuff since it was an option. Why dont you do a clean install of your OS and just install what is necessary to get a clean starting point for SS? that way you can rule out any extra stuff you installed.

Anything else than Mpeg2 is a loss of quality.

After testing all the Quality settings the DivX gives great loss of quality.

For me the recording with Haupauge 250PVR is almost acceptable and if you convert the mpeg2 files to DIVX goes below.

DivX needs to be improved a lot to be used as the needed format for recordings.

Again that is what I beleve.

Maybe some will say that this is reasonable result, but if you have a good and big TV the loss of quality is much more visuable.

Regards

You can set your Divx to get real, real close to the same quality as mpeg2 and still see a significant savings in space. I have been reecoding vids to divx since the 3x days. I just want to do it with snapstream and not have to do it manually thats all.

Mike, Because it's the 3 or 4th new install in the last 3 weeks..... and this a htpc it's already down to the bare minimums.

I've seen it go both ways. Some people it works fine for, some get shortened divx clips right out of the box, which there is supposedly a fix for, now i installed that fix but can't even tell if it worked becuase it now fails everytime either automatic or manually selected recompress with an Encore assertion error.

Neo, It is possible to get near dvd quality out of divx without a massive file size. I'd be pleased to get 1 or 2 half hour shows on a cd with good quality. I'll end up working on that part if i can ever get a recompress to finish.

Ah.

I use best quality settings for both recording to MPG and Divx recompression. I typically see about a 1.6GB file for 30 minutes get compressed to 600 or so when using Divx. There is no quality difference that I can see. I use a PVR-350 in my setup. I dont know if i am the exception or the rule, but the only time i have recompression fail is if i reboot the machine or something while in a job. If left on, my machine recompresses everything without issue. I hope you can get it working. it is nice.

One thing i do NOT like is that once a show is compressed, it thinks it is a NEW show again even if i have watched it. Not a big deal, but not accurate either.
