unable to playback mpeg files on 2nd machine

Got a wee problem
Set up 2 PVR boxes,
1:-Dell 2400 2.2ghz, 512MB ram, Hauppage pvr 350.
2:-Abit nf7, 1800xp, 512mb ram, ATI Tv Wonder VE

Both boxes work great. Slight picture quality decrease with the $50 capture card, but then for $120 cheaper than the Hauppage, hey I can live with that

Trouble is, when I try play MPG files over the network on the machines that dont have snapstream installed, media player goes to look for a codec and fails miserably.. the Divx encoded avi's work fine, just not the MPG files.. I have to keep them as MPG's for my Hauppage Media MVP box. Which is quite nice really other than lack of divx support.

So my question is, what codec is it looking for ? and where can I dl it ? or do I have to install snapstream on every machine that wants to play an mpeg recorded in snapstream ?

If you download the entire movie onto the networked computer does it work for you then? It seems like you are trying to stream MPEGs, but my understanding was that is impossible, but then again I think I might have that backwards because MediaMVP streams MPEGs somehow.

It shouldn't need an additional codec to play MPEGs within MediaPlayer.

The mpeg-2 codecs are not freely distributable, and that's why media player fails to download them.

Mpeg-2 codecs are included with any DVD software you might have, as well as with snapstream.

If you install snapstream on those other pcs, the codec will get installed, and wmp will then employ them to playback the files.

But you shouldn't install Snapstream on other computers you own unless you have a seperate license for each machine.

Well you learn something every day, I always install the DVD software with a fresh install, I didn't realize Media Player couldn't play without the codecs in that software.
