Stream Recorded Video For Dummies

I would like to watch a recorded show at work from my home computer. I am using a Wireless router/Access point for my home LAN.

I am new to streaming via the internet. Can someone step me through it?

Where do I find the IP address to access my home computer remotely?

How do I ensure the appropriate ports are open?

Can I start the recording remotely or does it need to be started locally and then watched remotely (kinda defeats the purpose since it would be over by the time I got to watch it at lunch time ?

Keep in mind my subject line when responding...

Thanks!

Also, can remote access "wake-up" a computer in standby?

can you remotely wake up a computer on standby?

Yes, its feasible you can, but not using any network service. You might be able to use a modem to wake it when you dial it and I know there is a feature on some lan cards called "Wake on Lan", but i don't know the procedure to set up either.

Bear in mind that when streaming FROM home to your place of work, most broadband providers cap the upload speed anywhere from 128k for dsl to 384k for some cable providers.

On top of that, most cable companies block ports such as Port 80. While Snapstream doesn't default to the standard web port, it does have an autofoward feature for that port to the correct web admin port. In short, don't depend on port 80.

The IP address of your lan's router can be found on the router itself. Just go into its web admin page while inside your network, and you should be able to find it in the settings. If you cannot, you might be able to get around this by subscribing to your own dynamic domain name such as dyndns.org. You won't need to know your ip ever again.

The ports you need can be found in your advanced > misc settings.

Using snapstream.net, you can remotely set recordings to take place and they will be placed into your recording queue. If you connect to your snapstream's web admin, you can also do this by setting it up manually.

Once it is recorded, you can watch the program any time you desire, hence the terms "Personal Video Station" and "Timeshifting".

Please read the FAQS and the knowledgebase for more information how to do this. Everything you need to know is in the Knowledgebase.
