Re: HDHomeRun QAM + BeyondTV Instructions

Just ordered an HDHomerun last nigth based on it working in BTV. I hope Comcast does all the locals at least in unencrypted QAM in my area. Is there maybe a site to check this out?

There are threads in the AVS forums by city/cable company where someone may already have this information

Hmm. I wonder if there is a way to trick my Fusion 5 into using the HDHR's drivers. Make it think it IS a HDHR!

Re: HDHomeRun QAM + BeyondTV Instructions

Maybe you guys should start a thread here where everyone can list the unencrypted QAM channels in their area and by provider, if Comcast Chicago offered unencrypted HD Discovery etc channels I'd consider switching, otherwise the only current option for those channels is a network tuner (firewire) through an adjusted box to be able to record them. My OTA channels are excellent quality so I don't need it for those.

Looks like Chicago only does locals, is this correct?

You could also change the channel's callsign in the SS.net custom lineup wizard, so they'll have the same channel #s as your OTA channels (if that helps you remember channel #s), but with different call signs (ex. OTA = KNTVHD; QAM = KNTVHDQAM).

I explain how channel numbering works in my previous post if that helps.
I understand how the channel numbering works. If I use my workaround, which uses the same physical channel, major and minor, then I only have to schedule a show on one channel (1171, for instance) and now it can record on either my Vbox OTA HD or the HDHR QAM HD, because they both have an entry for 1171 and they both tune the same (virtual) way. There are some channels that only exist on one or the other and those don't really matter what channel they end up getting.

I think the trick to the HDHR is that there is an intermediate software layer that they provide that does the translation of QAM channel to Physical Channel (Major and Minor). It seems like this is what is missing from other QAM solutions. They simply need an intermediate layer.

It doesn't seem like it should be too difficult for someone to write some software to do this.

I've got Comcast in Nashville and I get the local networks, WGN, CSPAN, QVC, UNI, the Military Channel, and the Comcast digital music channels. I can also tune in a LOT of On-Demand channels, but you're at the mercy of whatever happens to be on and the customer could stop, rewind, or fast forward at any time. It's kinda strange. From what I've read, my channel availability is typical. The local networks and a handful of things nobody wants.

If you've got OTA and it is good quality, and you don't need more tuners, then getting an HDHR might not be worth it. In my case, I'm about 30 miles outside Nashville, so I can't tune in some local channels and others have glitchy quality, at times, because of the distance.

do you have a digital-cable ready TV set? if so, just set it up to scan the digital channels and those are the ones the hdhr can get also

For SS. You're in Houston on TW cable. Don't they block everything on digital cable from recording except the must carry broadcast stations? In other words, is there any content from QAM that I couldn't get from OTA here in Houston.

Sorry I am not seeing the light.. a lot of people seem to have no problem, but I am ...

it does not let you continue if you don't do a channel scan. Also, the second part of my question.. I am thinking that if I am using the trial verson, I am not accessing my .net account where I set up the new channels... can anyone confirm this, or tell me how to get the trial version to use my already exhisting .net account?

Kilrsat has mentionned ESPN-HD and I think TNT-HD...

On my system, I just skip the channel scan. It is worthless. I just accept one channel and then after it is running, I login to the channel manager in the web interface. Here, I check and uncheck the appropriate channels (by checking their physical, major, and minor).

Re: HDHomeRun QAM + BeyondTV Instructions

Hmmm.

Two of my channels won't tune in, using BTV. Instead, I get a different channel (INDH). It does work, from the HDHR config gui, opening in VLC. Fortunately, the two channels that don't work are just CSPAN and CSPAN2 (98 and 99), which I rarely watch and I can get on my analog inputs.

My config file is good and I know they are set up, correctly. Here is the remap file, in case someone sees something I don't.
