How to create icon from jpg

Is there a way to convert a jpg image into an icon that I can use in the beyond media basic screen? There are several conversion programs but all seem to reduce the size of the icon to 48x48. I have found one program that you could get a 256x256 but this is still too small.

The default options, DVD, Music, Photos, TV, and Video all have a nice large image that represents it. The user installed applications use the associated software icon that looks distorted. Although this doesn't effect the operations it does reduce the professional look and esthetics.

Any ideals?

most photo editing software can do that. The key is to save the file as a PNG image. Gimp is a free program that will let you do anything photoshop can do

I thought that an icon file extension was ico. Is the png file extension recognized as a window icon file also?

BM or BM basic use PNG images to show on the screen. they aren't true icons, just images for the UI
