Re: [plugin] Movie Showtimes (August 4 Update)

yes you need QuickTime Alternative not actual quicktime. the link is on the first page.

my only other suggestion is to move on, this program is dead and no longer supported. you might want to try sagetv or something like that.

Re: [plugin] Movie Showtimes (August 4 Update)

thanks,
already exploring alternatives. I thought BM and the plugins were going to be open sourced? what a rip off, I think I will try to get a refund, plugin page should be taken offline as most don't even work and it's not fair to have a link to the plugins forum when many no longer function and still have the product for sale, this leads people to believe that the plugins would actually work, they want to let BM die that is up to them but at least drop the plugin forum so people don't purchase BM thinking that they will be able to use and install these plugins.

I don't recall SnapStream stopping support for BM.

Your joking right?

Actually, there was really never any support for this product since nearly the first release. Just check you version number....

It's a shame too, as with those of use stilling lacking a compable alternative, this could have really been the sh*t.

Re: [plugin] Movie Showtimes (August 4 Update)

I have not been seeing any movies in the News Movies This Week, or whatever it's called. Not for a very long time. I suspect the reason is I moved from a zip code that played movies opening week to a zip code that is third tier so our zip code doesn't get them for a very long time. The plugin downloads movies, time and trailers just fine for the theaters in our area. So it's working, we're just not seeing what's new this week.

I suspect new may be defined is in releasing this week *and* at a theater in your list. For me, this will always be nothing. It may be better to give an option for New Release movies regardless of your zip code, or new movies this week in your zip code.

The wife and I like this feature because it allows us to quickly see what movies are new, and then add them to our Netflix queue.

Can anyone confirm this behavior, or a possible solution for the problem we're seeing?

Scott

Yes, I can confirm this. The new movies feature stopped working for me quite a while ago. This add-on is no longer maintained or updated. There are other people that have commented on this no longer working earlier in this tread.

Re: [plugin] Movie Showtimes (August 4 Update)

I thought Kilrsat was maintaining this plugin? He usually was on top of the popular plugins, and this is certainly one of them from what I have gathered over the years on this forum. Could it be as simple as sending him a little request, or has that already been done?

I think what would be great is to be able to use another zip code like 90210 as the default for new releases. Since I care less about what's playing at a local theater and more about what's new, maybe I should change my zip to 90210 and be happy enough with that.

Thanks for confirming. At least I'm not crazy.

Yeah...this is a great pluggin. It still works...for the most part. It is starting to lose some things though.

It sure could use a little love!

The most important feature for me, does not work anymore. I forgot the name because I stopped checking, but it's the one where you can see new movies opening this week. I had thought it was related to my living in an area that does not get movies opening week so I changed my ZIP to 90210, but that didn't work.

So now BM is simply DVD Library for me now.

Re: [plugin] Movie Showtimes (August 4 Update)

Shucks -- movie showtimes completely stop working for us. I haven't been on the forum much in the last couple of years -- Beyond TV and Beyond Media just keep on working and working; it's been great.

Is Jason still maintaining the plugin?

I've always believed it would be reasonable to charge a minor fee for the plug-ins. The authors have been very generous, but let's face it, doing something one time for somebody is nice, doing something repeatedly for someone is work. We all expect to get paid for work.

I've posted it before: I would gladly pay a support fee for DVD Library and Movie Showtimes.

Wouldn't you?

C'mon Jason -- just let's us know how to pay you. We need Movie ShowTimes!!

I would if BM was supported. Since BM is not supported, I would not pay to support plug-ins for a long defunct product.

Re: [plugin] Movie Showtimes (August 4 Update)

Yeah, that's certainly a valid point Scott -- I am certainly not happy that Snapstream halted development on Beyond Media. However, I look at it this way: Snapstream introduced Beyond Media, and to my knowledge, has never had to put out a maintenance release to fix bugs. There were a couple of point releases to support things like the infared remote, but the product -- whether you liked the way it worked or not -- fundamentally worked. Beyond Media has never crashed or hung up on me. At this point (2009), it's difficult to imagine MS making any changes to XP that would adversely affect BM. When I look at the task of replacing BM, it's ALOT of work, and moreover, the solutions just aren't as attractive to me as the simplicity of BM. I have Media Portal running on our digital photo frames along side BM, and Media Portal is "ok", but it's not as elegant in its simplicity as BM. It does have a rather robust Movie Showtimes equivalent, but again, it's the simplicity issue with respect to day-to-day usage. I also have Media Center on my Vista machine and hold the same opinion: sexy interface, yes; but not as practical in day-to-day use as BM.

My hope would be to get another few years out of the current implementation. The only way that could happen though, is if DVD Library and Movie Showtimes are maintained.

Whatever I would replace BM with I expect would incurr some upgrade fees over the next five years -- I'd rather save myself all the work. Eventually, DVD Library will quit working. Then where will we be?

I have no idea how many users there are of DVD Library or Movie Showtimes, but what if a $10 annual maintenance fee would provide the needed incentive? It would be a no-brainer for me...

I can appreciate that it would costs Jason some $$$ to put the necessary infrastructure in place to accept payment, and I expect he would only consider doing so if he believed enough other users shared similar opinions as myself.

So c'mon people, if you like DVD Library and Movie Showtimes, post!

I have to agree with pdaughe.

I still use Beyond Media to this day. I would also pay or donate to keep plugins working.

With the minor exception of all of the things that do not work in it that could use a patch if they choose to support it. It just barely works for DVDs for me. It has serious issues with CODECs. I don't want to get into it. Back then this was the second most frustrating computer experience I ever had and the solution proposed by many was to buy this sound card, buy this CODEC pack, buy this video card, buy this DVD software, etc. It's an awesome concept, but I can't justify paying for something that I already paid for that never really worked.

Re: [plugin] Movie Showtimes (August 4 Update)

I finally pulled the plug on Beyond Media and have completely switched to Media Portal. I really like it...now, with version 1.0.0 release. I had tried MP a year or so ago and wasn't impressed. Much nicer now. Their equivalent DVD library works very nicely, and looks good. I have an entry on the main screen for "Watch TV" that launches BeyondTV.

Hop on over there to Team Media Portal and take a look.
