Re: I Miss Beyond Media

I still use BM to this day. Love it. Actually, before retiring after an evenings viewing of the latest TV shows, I check the weather forcast for the next day. So I know the WX does work. You may have not enabled it or something. I'll check my system tonight when I get home and see if I find something to solve the original poster's no-go on the weather thing.

I wonder if the plug-in gurus out there have also abandoned BM? I haven't seen anything new in some time. Along those lines, I really don't understand why new plug-ins can't be developed to address the desires of the users. Like the lousy music part as mentioned in this thread. You can turn off any feature so it doesn't show in the main menu .. why doesn't someone write a "play music" plug-in?

SnapStream may have pulled the plug on Beyond Media, BUT they still have this active forum, and allow us to download plug-ins and such.

I don't know that much about programming, but I have to wonder if the SDK is still available for BM and why a decent music plug-in can't be developed ??

Re: I Miss Beyond Media

I do some casual development stuff still but with such a smaller audience, I don't feel like it's worth my effort.

Re: I Miss Beyond Media

Yes if u can find it that will b great. Im now using Vista Media Center with BTV, and is woring find so far, but the weather addon and the movie one, sucks.

U Know is sad, thats why I miss it, cause the only thing that made BM worth was the ppl here making add-ons to it.

Re: I Miss Beyond Media

If it wasn't for DVD library I wouldn't even have BeyondTV. I wanted a complete Home Theatre PC not just a TV recorder and when I found Beyond Media's DVD library plug in during the demo I was sold. I have tried sagetv and it has some powerful features but not the simplicity of the DVD library and my kids love the library. My young son could navigate and watch all his movies before he was old enough to read.
The author of DVD library should license the code and come out with a stand alone library program.

Re: I Miss Beyond Media

No, SS should change BTV so that it will accept plugins, ideally BM plugins, then library can be an integral part of it.

Re: I Miss Beyond Media

So what can we use as an alternative to BM other than the crappy stuff built in to Windows?

Re: I Miss Beyond Media

Hi guys. Long-time BTV/BM user here (check my post count). If you have decent hardware, you seriously might want to check out Moovida, the free media player - play all your files - AVI, mp3, MKV, DivX, MOV, MP4

Frankly, I was blown away! It looks nothing short of stunning. I run it on Linux Mint using a Firefly Mini, but it runs on Windows too.

Oh yea. It's free!

- RIP Beyond Media. On with progress!

I took a peek at their web site. It certainly looks like it's going to be able to replace Beyond Media and then some. Lots of good things. It's free, is community supported, has plug-in capability, and even though somewhat new has a full feature set. I can't wait to get home and install it to my BTV server. Thanks .. great find !!

Re: I Miss Beyond Media

I installed it on my HTPC last night. Yes it's pretty slick. But has a way to go. I couldn't find any kind of "configuration" page. Where I could tell it which codecs to use etc. Yes, it is pretty well configured to play most anything, BUT it doesn't do a great job on my BTV digital recordings. There seems to be something that looks like an interlacing problem but I'm not sure just what exactly.

Of course I haven't really checked anything on the development site so I may be missing something. I do see a dozen or so plugins that are available.

I would like to be able to add BTV to one of it's menus so I could just toggle between the two. But the good news was it really didn't conflict with my BTV server in any way I could see.

I think it has a lot of promise. Do you know if they have any kind of customizable skins or ways to change the layout or options?
