Tivo

Hi Gang

New to the forum, and I think this question is in the right place. If not I am sure some one will tell me very quickly. ha ha

Any way I am looking for any one the sells a modified Tivo unit. I am looking for a series 2 unit with at least a 80G HD. I would prefer the newest 6.2 that is out there. New/used, price would naturally reflect if used. Don't want the best or the cheapest.

I am not exactly new to tivo I have been with them for several years. And have had several different units. So any one that knows of a good business/person that sells some of these, and is known to have a good reputation, let me know. I appreciate it.

Thanks......Gunny

http://www.weaknees.com/tivo/dual-tu...o-80-hours.php ...99 bucks for the 80G one.

They deal in TiVo's that have been modified...

Also try www.tivocommunity.com for their forums concerning modded TiVo's , although you'll find even if you have slight reservations about the TiVo experience, you'll be crucified by the regulars there.

I was a TiVo S2 person myself, but decided to go the BTV/BYOPVR route in the past few weeks due to the price of the Series 3, HDTV... and just to give myself a fun project to do.

Best of luck to you, hope this helps!

Re: Tivo

HI Bawker

Thanks for all the info. You are right about the prices of the new ones, but I expect they will come down just like the rest of them have through the years. That abbreviation you used, I am not too good on them, I think I know what you mean, but not sure. BTV/BYOPVR.? I think you are saying you are going to build your own. If this is what you are saying, I have thought of the doing the same thing. I have built several computers, and have had good results, so why not a Tivo. Only thing is all the different programs you would have to get.

Well thanks again.........Gunny

I was a Tivo person, I had 6 of them. I decided to go the BTV route instead of sticking with Tivo. There is several differences between building your own and Tivo. For one, with BTV there are no subscription fees. You can change out hardware as you see fit. You can have as many tuners as your motherboard can handle. You can add drives alot easier....the list goes on.

btv is one of the software products this forum supports. btv is short for beyond tv. if you want to know more go to www.snapstream.com for more info and a demo.

Sorry, but are you for real? You post about Tivo on the Snapstream site and want to know what this "BTV thing" is all about? Are you just posting blindly on whatever forum you find?

Re: Tivo

Hi jkirk

You know the old saying what is too good to be true usually is. I did some reading on it, and I have one question, does it do what they say it will.? Oh I just thought of another question, if this is so good why have I not heard of it before, because I do a lot of reading on these forums.

Say for instance you have a failry good computer, memory, HD's, etc, what would be a ball park price to get a person going in this.? Say going the best and going a normal way, average way.? I want to check out the requirements, in case I decide to go with this and decide to build another computer for just this. You have struck a nerve here, this might just be what I have been looking for. I know there is nothing perfect, so what are the pro's and con's with this.?

Thanks and take care............Gunny

Re: Tivo

Hi cncb

I posted I am new to this forum, not to all forums like this. I assure you I do nothing blindly, sorry I am for real. Not all of us has knowledge of this, what makes you think every one does.? How did you find out about it. Just because you know of it, does not mean every one does. I am not being a smart a** here, just making a point. I aim to learn about it though, now that I have been exposed to it. I like to learn new things. I am not new to computers and such, been messing with them since 1996 or so.

Most things like this take so much time and getting so many different programs, I sort of shy away from these. Not that I don't have the interest or time, I do, but not enough of the time and knowledge some of these things require. I am willing to learn any thing, to a point. I am a retired auto mechanic, and was still working on them when the electronics was full bloom. So between this and fixing everything in site, appliances, tools, computers, etc, I think I have the ability to take some of these things on. So with all your help, I will learn about this, and get involved, and be able to say to some one else, "are you for real" when they ask a stupid question like I did. ha ha ha ha ha

Thanks and take care........Gunny

I don't and would be glad to help if you had a question about Beyond TV or some other Snapstream product. I just question why you came on here asking about getting a modified Tivo since this website clearly has nothing to do with Tivo? As others have pointed out www.tivocommunity.com would be your best bet. Good luck.

Gunny,
If you are interested in BTV, you will find lots of info on this forum since it is mostly targeted towards the Beyond TV product. Snapstream's website has the "how to purchase" and "system requirements" etc. info It can be found here http://www.snapstream.com/
BTV works great - has no subscription fees and has a bunch more flexibility than Tivo. It's not for everyone though so you should do a free trial if you are at all interested.

As cncb said, if you're really interested in the tivo thing, you'll find more info on those forums at http://www.tivocommunity.com/.

Re: Tivo

Hi CNCB

I have a lot of different interests, Tivo is one of them. I was not going to post that here and then I changed my mind because I read something in one of the posts that gave me the idea that some one on here just might know this.

Now as it turned out I am glad I did. If not I would not have run across what we have been discussing, and meeting learned people like yourself, and others on here. And now that I have I just might skip the Tivo issue for now, and go this direction. I apologize for posting that on here, now that I know more about this site I see where my mistake was.

I am always open to new and better ideas. I was once told the only stupid question is one that was not asked, for fear it was stupid. I am not stupid but I know I will from time to time ask a question that would seem to you brains, to be some thing that is common knowledge. But trust me I don't ask a question unless it is some thing I really don't know or possibly don't understand. So please bear with me.

So now we are at the point of what direction you all think I should take. Any and all opinions, and ideas are gratefully accepted.

Thanks and take care............Gunny

Re: Tivo

You can talk about tivo here, I think cncb was just saying you would find more info on tivo over on that tivo community forum.

Start with the snapstream website as I mentioned in the above post. Read up and if you're still interested, download the trial and start trying it out. You will have questions at least by that point so post them on the Beyond TV forums.

Good Luck!
Brent

Re: Tivo

Hi Brent

I appreciate your information. I was going to go that freeby way, with BTV, but I have not had very good results with freebies it seems. Too many things left out, not good downloads, etc.

Being you reccomended it I will give it a try. I am sure this will give me a good idea of what it is all about. You do not know how cold or hot the water is until you get into it, they say. Is there anything I should watch for while getting the freeby.?

Thanks and take care...........Gunny

Just make sure your PC meets the prerequisites required for BTV. You will obviously need to have the minimum required video card and will need a TV Tuner card that is supported. If you don't have these things, I guess it wouldn't be completly free trial for you. If you do, there is absolutely no reason not to try it. BTV is the best PVR out there in my opinion. I think you'll like it. Let us know how it goes.
