View Full Version : Cable Set-up box to IPTV server and users
I receive a HDTV CATV network through a Set-up box.
I would like PC users in my office to be able to watch different channels as if they had all their own set-up box ?
Can I broadcast cables programs on IPTV ?
Can I Make an IPTV server with this solution ?
1/ If I multiply the Cable (the one I should plug in the Set-up box) in 5 with a splitter.
2/ If I plug those 5 cables in 5 haupauge PVR-500MCE pci cards
3/ If I Use SnapStream Beyond TV to get the 10 programs I can receive.
4/ If I broadcast the channels with VLC (or something else) on a private lan
Thanks for your answers

Using a motherboard with 5 PCI slots, you could install 5 PVR-500MCE cards and record 10 analog channels at a time on a single BTV server, then have each client run a copy of BTV-Link.
If you have access to some Clear QAM channels, you could replace some of those PVR-500MCE cards by HDHomeRun units (though you would need more cable inputs).
As for encrypted digital channels, that would require one Cable Set-up box per channel, with an IR-blaster (or serial connexion) to change channel. Though that would only get you SD resolution (until Hauppauge HD-PVR hits the street).
So: (I AM not a specialist at all !)
If I understand: There is no solution at all but to have 1 tuner for 1 channel to broadcast? There is no TV cable flow to DSl flow converter for exemple ?:loved:
1/ If the cable channels are encrypted, I have no solution to broadcast the programs, but to rent 1 box per channel I want to broadcast, plug those Boxes to PCI cards and then broadcast. is that it ?
2/ If the channels are clear,I can Buy 5 (or more) HDHomeRun a splitter, and broadcast 10 channels IN High definition over the LAN. But How ?
Do I have to plug those HDHomeRun to a switch ? and then to a server ?
Is there any diagram I can Use ?
3/ is there any other solution ?

Actually, assuming Clear QAM channels, the HDHomeRun can save to disk the whole unfiltered QAM, which typically contains 2 (or 3) HD channels or 6-12 SD channels. Then by selecting the right PID's, you could watch any of the sub-programs (channels) in that stream. How the channels are grouped is up to your cable provider, here for example what it looks like on Videotron-Montreal (http://illico2.tripod.com/NumMtl200803.html), though everything is encrypted here.

Technically you could look into the cablecard (ATI's Occur) and possibly stream those channels to some X-Box 360, that's the only alternative to decrypt those channels without a cable box.

You would have to check the manufacturer's web site (http://www.silicondust.com/). Basically it has 2 inputs (no internal splitter) and a network connexion, so you could plug 5 of them in a 8 ports Gigabit switch. If a server is needed or not depends on your needs... A BTV-Server + some BTV-Link would make handling the channel changes easier, though you could simply use VLC + the included software.
