This is one of the best BTV add-on's there is, it's sweet having my podcasts show up in my Recorded TV folder.

Thanks.

has something changed with dl.tv.

The shows are continuing to downlaod and play fine but about half the time the descriptions are missing.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Nothing has changed with my plug-in or with dl.TV I have been trying to figure this out and am working on it. I issues the call to BTV server to add the show description but info but the server does not accept the update

Anything strange with the "Editable" flag?

I just wanna say that this add-on is awsome! I used to have to manually download all my video podcasts and copy them over the network. This is an awesome timesaver! Great job!

I wish the download manager in this program was a little more robust. Every time I try to download something from revision3.com (Diggnation, Systm, The Broken, etc.) it stalls and times out.

mpp_mpp

Are you having the same problem downloading the podcasts if you where to download them through internet explorer

Are you having the same problem downloading the podcasts if you where to download them through internet explorer

No.

I think part of the problem is that revision3.com really pushes the torrent links versus the conventional download links. Their servers are usually quite busy. Other vidcasts such as dl.tv downloads without problems.

I didn't mean to do a "drive-by complaint" ... It just seems as though Podcatcher doesn't try to resume downloads or even retry... if the link dies, Podcatcher gives up.

Cal

the only revision3 one I download is InDigital. Its always worked great with podcatcher.

dltv on the other hand has issues. It downloads fine but almost never has the description properly. I think its the extra html code in the item.description field.

I don't know much about how the feed should look. Nor do I know what podcatcher is looking for but I spent a bit of time looking at the yahoo pipes stuff and managed to reformat the dltv feed and it seems to be work fine with podcatcher now.

Of course I only did it on the weekend so It only has downloaded Tuesdays show since then. If it continues to work for the next couple weeks, I'll post more.

I have made a couple of changes to the program to fix these issue

Increased the time out time from 100000 to 1000000
When writing the description to btv it now removes html tags
Now it set the editiable tag to true and read only to false when writing the properities

I hope this fixes some of peoples issues

A newer version is in post 20 http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/showpost.php?p=271697&postcount=20

Yesterdays download worked again via the pipe but I'll download and use your new version as well as put the feed back to the original instead of using the pipe I created and we shall see next week what happens.

Thanks for the updated program.

Hi,

This podcaster looks great but how can I get youtube videos to download to a format that BTV can view?

I would like to have the youtube most discussed and top downloads.

Thanks,

Joe

I'm sorry but you tube videos are not supported in the BTV so you will have to use an external program that will convert the videos from flash videos to a format btv will read

First off, I love this addon! One strange thing that happened last week though, don't know if its something to do with the podcasts servers or Podcatcher...but It downloaded ALL the episodes of a couple of the podcasts, almost filled up my HDD! did anyone else experience this, mostly it looks like Rev3 shows.

mpp_mpp
10-03-2007, 07:22 AM
Thanks for the comments. And it happened to me to and the reason why it happed is because revision 3 changed the way the label the shows in the feeds and this made all the episodes look as if they where new and it started to download them. I then wanted to stop all the hundreds of downloads to do that you can closed the btv podcachter program and reopened it and that cause all pending and active downloads to be canceled and all the items in the feed is marked as not new so it would not download them automatically again.

Cal
10-04-2007, 02:42 PM
Yes. Has been happening with DLTV since I first tried this addon. Every couple weeks I'd get it downloading a bunch of old stuff.

I finally looked at the yahoo pipes (reformats and truncates the dltv feed) and use that as a feed so podcatcher can only see the newest one. I like the add on but I only let it run once a week to grab stuff because of this.

Dl.TV had an issue a long time ago with their feed but they fixed it very quickly I am not having an issue at all with the xvid version of their feed. I will look in to an addition to the program that will only pickup the top couple of episodes but I can not give you a time line of how long it will take as I have been very busy lately

mpp_mpp

I have updated the BTV Podcatcher to a version that added the ability to only look at the first few item in a feed to see if they are new instead of the complete feed. You can find this change in the feed setup.

I have also an added a couple of button for easy of use in removing a feed from the feed setup. I have also added a button that will cancel all the active downloads and a button that will remove all downloads form the download manager.

Some other under the hood changes have also occurred.

For the most time I have been able to migrate all the settings to the new version but once I had an issue that i could not resolve. If this occurs you will be unable to start the BTV Podcatcher. To fix this issue remove the file FeedInfo.bpc from the C:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher (Windows XP or 2000) or C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ Program Files\BTV Podcatcher (Windows Vista) folder

I hope this fixes some of issues that you are having with the program downloading a lot of past episodes.

I installed this yesterday and was able to download a few episodes. Today, however, I am unable to download any episodes from some new podcasts. I can't even download the ones I did yesterday. Is there a log file or something I can review to see where the problem is?

mpp_mpp

not sure why it wont start my guess is the config file or the feed data file might have gotten corrupted.

First try and make sure your internet connection is working

Second if the program is starting and you can see the main window take a look at the feed setup and if any of your feeds show error as the title and the description shows the reason

to create a log file of what is happening click on the start menu an then run and type in "c:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher\BTVPodcatcher.exe" >"c:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher\log.txt"

on windows vista you might need to type run into the search box under the start menu to find the run dialog and you will need to replace "c:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher\log.txt" with another location that you have write access to.

this will create a log file you where looking for

To reset the program to the original status remove the files FeedInfo.bpc and BTVPodCatcherConfig.xml from the C:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher (Windows XP or 2000) or C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ Program Files\BTV Podcatcher (Windows Vista) folder

If you can provide me with more details I will try to solve the issue

not sure why it wont start my guess is the config file or the feed data file might have gotten corrupted. These files have been previously recreated.

First try and make sure your internet connection is working I have a working connection to the Internet.

Second if the program is starting and you can see the main window take a look at the feed setup and if any of your feeds show error as the title and the description shows the reason No errors on the screen.

to create a log file of what is happening click on the start menu an then run and type in "c:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher\BTVPodcatcher.exe" >"c:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher\log.txt" I started the program using this redirection method, but the log file does not appear to be getting created. I know its not a rights issue.

If you can provide me with more details I will try to solve the issue. What episodes does this download automatically? The current date only? I was abel to download an episode tonight by going into the Feedviewer menu option, selecting the podcast, selecting the episode (in the past), and clicked download enclosure and it worked.

Thanks for you help.

What are other watching? Are there any good shows to watch beside tech stuff?

DLTV and Tekzilla. But from seeing the above I think I'll check out few more.

The writers strike means nothing to me. I still have so much stuff to catch up on. Plus a couple of old series that I have but have not started watching yet.

Thanks for the link tips. I'm exploring this weekend!

Anyone have their G4 feeds go south on them? I still get RocketBoom and Tiki Bar, but all the G4 ones (attack of the show, around the net) cause errors or crashes of BTV Podcatcher.

I love this, but I am having one problem. I am noticing that the Viewscape slows down to a crawl when I attempt to even scroll past a downloaded show in my recorded shows section. Attempting to control it once it is started is difficult as well. I am running a very limber machine. All of my other recordings are not having this problem.

Sorry for the slow response but I have been traveling all last week and the weekend.

The config files are located on windows xp

C:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher\BTVPodCatcherConfig.xml - this file hold application wide settings please note the password is not stored in plain text for security reasons
C:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher\FeedInfo.bpc - this file hold all the feed information include the feed urls and feed settings and the items in each feed

On widows vista the files are in the following folder C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ Program Files\BTV Podcatcher

Not sure why the g4 feeds where not working for you but I just tried them and they seamed to be working now, I do not subscribe to these feeds normal so was not able to notice any outages. If you are still having a issue with these feeds please let me know

The viewscape had an issue with the can slow down because the description of the show or has to long of a description (this is not really my problem) but in the most recent version of the BTV podcatcher http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/showpost.php?p=272573&postcount=22 if the description is to long I limit the length the amount of text being added to the properties
Also please make sure you are using the most recent version of BTV as this has helped the issue.

If you want me to look into the item that is slowing down your viewscape can you tell me what feed you notice the problem on and which episode it is occurring on.

Two questions:

1- How do I remove feeds? I accidently created a duplicate.

2- Why won't a feed such as this work? Is it because its generated from a PHP link? It works fine in Google Reader and Miro.

to remove the a feed
If you are using the most recent version (from post 20 http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/showpost.php?p=271697&postcount=20 in this thread) you can double click the feed in the grid at the bottom feed setup form and then click on the delete button
if you are you using an earlier version of the program that does not have a delete button you need to double click on the feed in the grid at the bottom of the feed setup from and then remove the feed url text from the text box and press save.

Thanks for the information about the feed that wont work I think I found the reason why this wont work and have fixed it in the code. I do not want to make a release right now of the code until the next update of beyond tv comes out as I had to make changes to the way I communicate with the BTV and this makes my version of BTV Podcatcher only work with that version and not the previous versions.

I am loving the podcatcher. Thank you for building it.

One question: is there a way to take a config file of all the podcasts I have loaded and move it to another machine that is also running the podcatcher, without having to reload them all again?
snip :dude:

mpp_mpp
02-14-2008, 05:38 PM
you can move the config files to a new computer and it will work

to do this simply install the btv podcatcher on the new computer and run it once (you probably might want to add one feed just to make sure it creates both file but this is not requied)

then you take the two configuration files listed below and copy them over to the new computer and replace the files that already exists

On widows vista the files are in the following folder C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ Program Files\BTV Podcatcher

then you can start up the application and it will load the feed file you should then should go though the feed setup and check the save to folder for each feed and make sure that it exist otherwise you will get an error when a file is downloading and it can not find the directory to save it in. Also if a download start before you change the save to location if you might have to start the download again because I set the filename and save to location for the downloaded before the it starts.

if you have any problems please let me know

I just started playing with podcatcher and its seems to be working pretty well for me so far.
I do like how it imports the pod casts and provides the metadata for beyond tv to list the name and description for podcast items.

I do have a couple of feature requests:
- a bandwidth throttle
- ability to schedule time of day for updates

I play online games a lot and its annoying when my game starts to lag horribly because something on my home network decides to start updating or downloading. It would be great if podcatcher could be set to download at a certain time late at night or early in the morning.

Also it would be helpful to be able to control how much bandwidth it uses for the downloads to make it "play nice" and share politely with other computers and applications trying to use the internet on a shared home network.

Thanks for providing this cool program.

mpp_mpp
02-14-2008, 06:28 PM
I might be able to implement a bandwidth throttle not sure about this yet but I will look in to some code I found.

I will add in the next version time of day to allow automatic updates and downloads to occur but this will still have to have the timer event fire in the time so it will not be a complete schedule of when to update occur.
Right now if you do not want the program to to update you can edit the timer setting or close the application.
you might also look at how often you program updates the feeds and set the timer settings to a higher value.

I am pretty sure I fixed this in the next version of BTV Podcatcher
this was the same error that tmar89 (http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/member.php?u=11897) was having earlier.
I was able to setup that feed and download an item in the version of btv podcatcher built for the current beta of beyond TV (4.8.1).
If you would like to use this version that has the fix, you need the beyond tv 4.8.1 version (will have to join the public beta) you can then find BTV Podcatcher in the beyond tv beta section of the forum http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/showthread.php?t=44089

I will still test it when I get home in the new version but with the complete change of the backend it should not have any problem adding or dowloading and I am pretty sure it will add the media information. There is a new user setting with the delay time before writing the media information to btv (most of the time when the media information is not added is because the btv has not found the file yet)

BTV PodCatcher RULES! :dude:

PodCatcher has been working great for the last couple of months.
But, I just did 'the weekly' windows update and now it won't run. Trying to start the program caused a windows error to appear.

Running on XP with version 4.6 of BTV.

I removed the BTVPodCatcherConfig.xml and FeedInfo.bpc from the directory and then PodCatcher will start up with no feeds configured.

As soon as I tried to add a feed (revision 3 - systm) it had a .NET error (null ref):
http://revision3.com/systm/feed/xvid-large

UPDATE - It seems that revision 3 is currently down. I added Cranky Geeks and CommandN with no problems.

I think that if the service is down then a minor bug in the version of PodCatcher (V 1.2.3.1) that I'm running.

Please keep up the good work!

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Derek

Here is an updated version of the BTV Podcatcher for BTV 4.8.1

Please note that you will have to have BTV version >=4.8.1 due to the changes in the security / login procedures; to have this version add the media information

Due to rapid pace of the development of this version and the fact that I rewrote the complete back end and how the data is store and the fact I have been extremely busy I did not have the time to make this version read the old feed file or settings file. Because of this you will need to setup the program and your feeds again once you install this version. So please take note of all your feeds before you install the new version as you will not be able to see this information after you install the update.

Also due to a hard drive issue the help file included is correct but has a couple of items that are not finished yet, mainly some of the screen shots are not updated. Also there has been a couple of new option in the program setup form that are not mention in the help.

There is several new features most of them have to deal with Setup options for the program or feeds. You now have more options on when to automatically download new episodes. There is also more program options to control when thing happens. The feed view has completely change to provide more information to the user.

If you have any questions or problems please post them and I will take a look to see how I can fix them

One other change is where the settings file are located. The files are now saved to the program data directory (on vista C:\ProgramData\BTVPodcatcher2
on XP C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BTVPodcatcher2
the files BTVPodCatcherConfig2.xml is program settings and FeedInfo2.bpc is the feed settings )

To install or update the version all you need to do is to run the
The help on how to use the program is now included in the application just look at the help from the menu bar

I'm having trouble with the new version of BTV Podcatcher. I just downloaded and install BTV 4.8.1, backed up all my RSS feeds, and installed the new BTV Podcatcher over the old version that I had.

I have the program set up correctly (from what I can tell), but no matter what I do, it won't turn on "Beyond TV Integration". This is greyed out and every RSS feed that I put in has an error that says "Error with feed".

I'm just using all the default settings and I don't have security turned on, in BTV. I've tried the same RSS feeds that are in the help file. I've checked my firewall settings (though that shouldn't matter, since it is on the same local machine.)

I've tried uninstalling BTV Podcatcher, deleting directory contents and reinstalling. I get the same results.

BTV integration is disabled because when you load the feed setup form it test to see if it can connect to the BTV web services (API) if it can not log in it will not enable this option

Do you have any local firewall programs installed like zone alarm and are you having problems accessing anything in internet explore.

if you do have a firewall that is bidirectional make sure you allow btv podcatcher to access the internet and local web pages

It sound like the program can not access anything through the network this includes the btv web services or any feed.

Also if that does not fix it tell me what the description say next to one of the feeds that say error with feed

I don't have any firewall except the standard Windows firewall. On that, I opened a port to 8129, even though this shouldn't be necessary.

I can pull up the BTV Web Admin just fine via Firefox or IE 7.

When I add a feed, the Title says "Error with feed" and the Description says "Configuration system failed to initialize"

Btv intergration is disabled because it could not login or find the btv server

First make sure you are using btv podcatcher version 2 you can tell that you have this version if the program setup has a username field
if you do not have the right version go to page 4 of this thread and dowload that version

If you have that version
try adding a feed an see if it the title says error with feed the description column will tell you what error you have
if the error is like configuation did not initialize try deleting the btvpodcatcher2.Exe.config file then restart the application

If the feed setup properly
then it is probably not setup properly
first try to access the web admin in Internet explore
if that does not work then restart you btv server and try again
if you can bring up the web admin
Then check your program setting and make sure the username password btv server and port are setup properly save the form then open up the feed setup form and see if it is enabled

If that did not work please let me know

Yes, I am using version 2 from page 4.

I added a feed and it says, "error with feed"

I tried deleting .configuration file and have the same thing. I also tried replacing my .configuration file with the one you uploaded and still get the same thing.

My webadmin works fine and I am using the same username and password to try to get podcatcher to work and still get the same problems.

There must be a problem with the security coding you have... I don't know what else it would be.

there is not a issue with the security coding

the issue is something is blocking the program from accessioning the the internet. I am guessing this is the same thing that Cal.

what did the description say in the feed setup for the feed that had error with feed - this will be what error occurred

I also am sending you a P.M. with some task that will help me figure out what is causing the issue

No pool will not work - please do not select this a save location, I will remove this option in the next release of the program

I don't think it tells me what the problem feed is. Is there a way to find this out?

First I am going to say this I am pretty sure the message you are getting is because the feed from the internet did not include an enclosure (the download url) or the feed on the internet is not properly formatted

The name of the feed may be in the bottom left corner next to the progress bar
it will say "Updating <Name of feed>"

if that does not work here is a work around to get the program started
Edit the BTVPodCatcherConfig2.xml
change your start time and end time values to this
<startTime>00:00:59</startTime><endTime>00:01:00</endTime>
this will then cause when you open up the program (given that it is not 12:00:59 am)
for to skip the updating feeds
then you can open up the feed viewer and go through each feed and click on the refresh current feed this will only update the feed you are on.
this will help you figure out which feed the error is occurring on.

a thing that may temporary work once you know which feed is causing the issue is go into feed setup edit that feed and then press save (you do not need to change any value) this will cause the program to update that feedinfo file with all the current detail from the internet about the feed and then any of the old items in the feed will not try to download. - This may not fix anything.

also I looked through all of the code and the only two pop up message box that can occur are "No File to Download", or "Error with filename or download URL". these two errors both deals with errors I mentioned earlier.

It appears that after I setup the feeds, I must go into the viewer to individually download each podcast I want. There is no way to select all of the podcasts that I can find to download them with one or two clicks.

Also, is there a way to schedule them to automatically download all. I saw an entry in the feed that made me think it already did this, but I waited overnight and only the specific podcasts I clicked download on have been downloaded.

No way right now to download multiple past podcasts items in one or two clicks

It will download new episodes when they are published - if you have the setting for this on. The setting is download new episodes on. And the options are GUID, filename or date. There are 2 ways to turn this off one is set the download on option to do not download or you can set the max number to download to none

Most podcast will work on the GUID option.

You probaby did not see any new episodes download because no episodes were put out between the time you setup you feeds and now.

To test this subscribe to a daily podcast like tekzilla daily at revision3.com ( I can't paste the URL since I'm on my phone)
and tommorow you will get a new episode when it is published

first off you can not just change the extension of Revision3 HD feed files to m4v and get it to play (when you do so you get an error message "invalid sample description" if you try to play it in quicktime and the file will not play in BTV)

When I was developing the current version of BTV Podcatacher I thought long and hard about adding this function.

I do have some automatic file extensions changes occurring (divx to avi and xvid to avi)

Not all mov files can change the extension to m4v or mp4 (both acceptable h264 extesnion) will play. in fact most mov I found do not work. This includes the HD feeds for revision3 they say they are h.264 but the ones I have tried do not work.

Since I could not find a feed that would need this functionality I left it out.

I would recommend subscribing to the large xvid or large quicktime feeds (which does have the m4v extension)

First off i did not realize any one was still having this issues with the program (both people who posted about it ether posted that they got it working or responded to a pm that got it working

Second have you tried deleting the C:\Program Files\BTV Podcatcher\BTVPodcatcher2.exe.Config file

(it still exists in your system by your debugging comments -- the latest version should have removed this file but it did not)

Third if that does not work make sure you have installed .net 3.0 (this will for sure fix the issue)

Oh and one more thing are you using this version

If you are using the version posted on my last link had a fix that removed a .net 3.0 reference (original developed for 3.0 then changed the code to .net 2.0 for compatability but forgot to remove 1 3.0 connection to an API )
so in theory you do not need .net 3.0 but I can not test this since all my machines have . Net 3.0 and . Net3.5 installed

So if the last version you downloaded was the debuging version (I can tell this by the console statements) then you need to dowload this update and try that before you install .net 3.0 to see if you really need to install .net 3.0

Also to clear somthing up the location the cosole comments point to is where my source code lives and you would not see that level of details in a non debbuging version (so you can probably guess my name)
Please let me know if that works

Ok... I seem to be working now. Installing 3.0 fixed the issue. I would just add that as the requirement and update your installer to look for it.

One question though... I have BTV set to manage video not created by BTV. However, everything that Podcatcher downloads is get marked "Keep Show Until I Delete It". How do you change this? I want them all "Keep Show Until Space is Needed".

I have a question first off did you install the version I linked to in 72 that version first off will run faster since it does not have the debuging symbols had the fix for not needing .net 3.0

I'm not sure what to do to get btv to manage the shows an let them expire. You already change the one setting I know about "let btv manage external videos." Let me play around with some settings and get back to you.

rev3 currently has an issue with there server. they are not supplying the right response when you try to make a connection. They usally fix this by the next bussines day. they servers seam to have this error about once a month.

This is not an issue with btv podcatcher but with the source of the podcast

If you are already subscribe to the feed an see this error just leave your subscription alone and when they fix the server issue it will be back to normal. If you are just subscribing to the feed you can leave your subscription alone but when they fix the issue it proababy will try to download all the episodes in the feed since the program thinks they are new. You can limit the number of episodes too dowload by changing the max shows to download setting for that feed

By the way you can tell why there is an error with the feed by looking at the feed description. Right now it is saying something like a protocol violation

yes it is all rev 3 feeds

The only issue is with the program looking at the rss feed for new episodes. There is no problems downloading show this incuded writing out properties ( note the series title may show error with feed)

A technical description of the error is on windows machines to end a line you need both a carriage return and line feed. On other OS like mac osx and Linux it is just line feed. Mac OS 9 it was just carriage return. I am using the built in XML processing with .net. This .Net processing requires when communicating to use the windows set to end a command. The rev3 server is only sending line feed to end a command. While this is fine for most applications some windows applications will not load the data do to issues of impropper formating. Most developers know about this and will end lines with both a CR and a LF '\r\n' to maximize comparability this will work with all systems. Rev3 maybe created the issue when they added the new show.

my guess is it has to deal with the video file (the way it is formated) and it will not accept the media metadata from btv

Since I am at work if you can try this in web admin try to edit the show information of the file press save and see if btv shows the media information

If it does not show the info then it is btv if it does then I will take a look when I get home

Just on update on the REV3 feed issue I am working on a work around for the issue and should have something posted by the end of the day. This work around does have some security implications. To use this work around you will have to change a program setting to enable it. by default i will leave this setting off.

mpp_mpp
04-28-2008, 08:34 PM
The following update has a setting that will enable REV3 feeds to work while they have the improper HTML heading

To enable this work around you need to go to the features - program setup
then change the option set Unsafe Header Processing to yes and press the save settings button

Change this setting to yes does open up a small security risk so if you do not trust the source of you feeds I would recommend leaving the setting at no. If all your feeds are used by many people and come for site you would trust then it is ok to set this setting to yes.

I do not believe there is a big security risk because IE and Firefox both seam to not require the strict guidelines for websites headers - so it should be the same level of risk as surfing the internet.

If you like the technical details about this setting go to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.net.configuration.httpwebrequestelement.use unsafeheaderparsing.aspx

Also in this version is a new program setting to set the downloaded files to be read only if the files are not read only btv might expire the videos according to the expiration manager

Update.. removed this file see current version in post 119

I've seen that problem with the WMV version of several shows. I changed to the DivX or Xvid feed and they always work perfectly. I think (though I'm not sure) that the WMV weirdless is actually intentional, on the part of the encoder.

I am not having any issues with rev3 I can pause just fine. What version of the feeds are you using ( if you are using xvid do you have the latest version of the codec found at xvid.org) also what are your playback settings (overlay vs 3d accelerated, deinterlacing) also do you have the latest graphics card driver

Probably try a diffrent playback settings or a diffrent type h.264 vs xvid and see if that works

first make sure you are using the version posted about 8 responses ago (post 108)

To download episode that already exist after setup go to feed viewer select the feed in the drop down. Then select the episode you want to download the press the download current episode button.

Btv integration is disabled because the program can not find and with btv server check to be sure that all the program settings are correct and if you are btv 4.8 you need version 2 the one a couple of post ago if you are on a old version of btv you need an old version look in the thread for old version

Right before you replied i found the new version, and that one now connects to BTV.

The problem i have now is having it download all items right after I set it up.

I see their is a setting drop down box, that says "Items Not already found in feed by file name" does this mean is should download what I don't have on my hard disk?

I just want it to download all, and it would be nice if I could use the Feed viewer to selects what ones I want, then hit the download items button.

Ok here is some notes on the Podcatcher when you are in setup and press save the feed you were editing or adding will update the feed but it will not download any files it needs a baseline to start from.

Currently there is no way to download all episodes in a feed you can only go one by one. I have the request already to be able to download multiple items in the feed viewer but I have yet to add this to the program and I am not sure if this will be ready when I make the next update (this update will come in the next couple of weeks) The items that I have been working on in this update is fixing some of the issues when the properties are not written out the properties BTV

The option you are changing in feed setup is how the Podcatcher determines if an episode is new. Then new episodes are downloaded. if the RSS file is properly formated I would start with the GUID setting. If you then are having issues with the feed and dowloading the episodes I would then change this setting.
For example on maholo daily h.264 (itunes feed) they publish a mov file in the middle of the night and then when the h.264 file is reneder it will then change the file name to point to the h.264 file (m4v) for this feed I use the filename setting to make sure to get the

You can look at the help document in the program for more information about all the diffrent feed setup settings. Note that there are some areas in the help that are not finished and due to the fact that I lost my laptop hard drive and I have to rewrite the complete RTF document that the help file was complied from before I can make any changes.

Update.. I will have the ability to download multiple items in the feed viewer in the next version of the application

This update fixes a couple of issues with shows and properties not being written to the files. (mainly filter out some of the existing properties and do not include them when writing the info to BTV also change the to ' as BTV does not like the )

I have also included the ability to try to rewrite the Media info to BTV in the download view (right click on a file that has finished downloaded or had an error writing to BTV to view this option)

I also added the ability to download multiple items from the feed viewer at one time. To do this open up the feed viewer then on the feed items tab you will need to select the items you want to download to select multiple items hold down the ctrl key and and click on the items in the grid you want to download you can also click on the first item and then hold down the shift key and click on the last item and all the item in between will be selected (just the same way that you can select multiple files in windows explore) then click the button to download current feed item (note you can not use the right click to view the pop up menu to download multiple items this will still just download one item)

I'm having an unusual problem lately...

Many of the podcasts I download have their colors messed up. The screen comes up predominantly green with very little detail. It's almost like a negative image except that everything is washed out in neon green. It looks like a music video from the 70's

Any idea what might cause that? It happens most frequently on "Cranky Geeks" which is a DivX file I think, but it's also happened with the Tekzilla WMV version.

I'm thinking it might be a codec issue on my end? but then why does it happen only with certain files?

First off crankky geeks does not have a divix file, it does have a WMV file I am going to assume this is the format you are using

You issue isn't a problem with BTV Podcather it is a problem with BTV playing that file you can confimr this by downloading the file in a web browsoer and seeing if it plays the same. Along time ago I had a similar problem playing WMV files in BTV (execpt they were all green) and I fixed it by updating my graphics card driver. That is where I would start make sure you are running the current driver from nvidia or ati. If that does not work double check to see if the files play ok in windows media player (I think they should play fine here but if they do not)
then try playing another WMV file in BTV that you created from BTV by doing a showsqueeze and see if it it only external wmv.

I would also try changing you you video renderer setting (the one that has overlay and 3d accelerated)
I would also try diffrent mpeg-2 decoders and see if that helps

A workaround to you prblem whould be using the h.264 feed for cranky geeks and ether the h.265 (but not the HD one) or Xvid feed (need to install the xvid codec on your playback machine but will play fine in BTV after you do that) for Tekzilla

Again my guess is if you update you graphic card drivers (especially if you or on a nvidia driver from about a year ago) that that might fix the issue

Sorry for the late response saw your post this morning but work was really busy and I could not stop to respond.

the only log file is in the program memory - to view this go to view options and then click show console (but this may not have what you want in it and it will only hold a certain amount of text before it starts to remove the old entries from it and it does not save when you close the application. - If you are a developer and you know about the System.Console you can redirect the output from here (using the command line or attach a VS session) but this only hold info about exceptions and other events I used in building to test and does not have anything about the no file to download (this is different from the log in the menu even though they have the same name)

Right now there is no way to automatically close the messages - I might look into this for a future option but right now it just stay up

the "no file to download" error occurs because there is no enclosure in the rss for a feed item that is trying to download.
A way to view the enclosues is to go into the feed viewer go to the feed items tab. and the Download URL is the enclosure so if that is blank that is your feed that you are having an issue with.

You're right, of course. I was at work and was going from memory. WMV it is.

With a little investigation (don't know why I didn't think of it before) I see that it plays the same way in Windows Media player as in BTV, as do WMV files created by BTV. The colors are also wrong in Media Player Classic and Zoom Player. Interestingly enough, the same files play OK with VLC.

I'm running the 8.4 Catalyst drivers from ATI. I recently upgraded my HTPC to an ATI 780G chipset and I'm using the on-board graphics. I could try downgrading to the drivers that came with the mobo (8.3 I think) but I doubt that will help.

I dont know if the drivers is going to fix the issue since you were using ati. Mine was caused by Nvidia Drivers ( not sur which card i had at the time or which drivers it was)

One thing I found is try disabling WMV acceleration in the ATI CP

My guess is the feed info file got corrupted the file is in your {app data}\btvpodcatcher folder

(can't get the actual file name while at work)

This probaly hapend when the file was saved before you closed the app. This file is saved when an update occurs, or when you edit a feed in feed setup

My guess is since you restatted the app which caused an updated the program all ready created a new feed info file over the corupted one an I would not be able to take a look at it to see how it was corupted

You can look at the console (in view menu) and see if any errors were recorded

I am seeing an odd thing when deleting podcasts inside BTV. It doesn't happen on all but often enough to be of concern. After I watch a podcast in btv I esc out and click on delete file. A dialog box pops up with the usual "Do you really want to delete this recording?" and it will sometimes zoom up to fill in the whole screen in sort of an "its going to blow up the machine" look and feel. It hasn't done that but its disconcerting that it does that. Has anyone else seen that behaviour? I haven't noticed a pattern yet, but will concentrate to see if its the mp4 or wmv or xvid or what. First off the issue sound as it is btv not my program caused the issue once the properties are written the podcatcher has noting to do with the file.

I have never seen this. The delete screen always seams normal.
the next time it happens take a screen shot of this. Then see if you can see if you can constantly replicate the issue; for example do not deltete the epoisode and close btv interface open interface try to deltete show again.
If you find one show that always causes the issue post which show and I will take a look at.

If you can constantly replicate then you might contact snapstream and submit the bug.

Also search user support forum and see if you can find other people with the same issue.

I have a request for a new feature in BTV Podcatcher. I would like to be able to run processing on a downloaded file, and have the new processed file replace the original so that all the "show info" stuff is still correct but I have the file I want.

My wife has a couple of good podcasts that she subscribes to that are only available in .mov format. To watch them in BTV, I have run format converter manually. That's not horrible, but then I also have to recreate all of the show info stuff through the admin tool. It's really a lot easier to fire up the quicktime player and view it that way, but it's annoying because we'd both just rather use BTV.

Plus, she's really jealous that shows like Cranky Geeks (my shows) show up as a new show in BTV but all of her stuff has to be viewed <ahem> manually.

I gotta admit, the integration of all the show info is a great feature of the Podcatcher. So... if there was a simple way to fire off a command to a converter it would be a giant step forward.

I will look in to doing something like that but I probably will not get around to doing for some time.

First off what tool are you using to convert the podcast file (this will help me in making sure it works from BTV Podcatcher)

I do have one question that you might be able to help with how will my program know the new converted file name and extension to write the properties. I might have to have this a part of the setup of the the command in BTV Podcatcher but there would be some liminitation mainly if the file that the external tool was converting to already exists before the tool was run (example file a.m4v exist and btv downloads a.mov [that file name does note exists when we started] then the tool runs and tries to convert to a.m4v but since this file exists it goes to a_1.m4v)

Can you post a link to one of her show that way I test it out with a show that it will be used on.

Again do not look for this addition any time soon as it might take a while to develop and implent.

On a side note I posted that I would probably make a release this weekend well do to the holiday there has not been enough new Podcast release for a though testings of the changes to the write BTV Properties so I may wait till middle of this week before I make the release public just want to make sure the changes did not break anything.

After I read your reply I suddenly realized that I asked for something that I can't use. In fact, the video converter I use doesn't even have a line command mode so the request in a bit bogus. Having said that I'm going to look into finding a converter that has one and after I test it out, I'll definitely respond. Sorry for jumping the gun here. All of my holiday "food" is obviously affecting my brain.

I use the windows of mplayer and it converts formats for me when I want it to. You could just run a batch file at a set time to convert all the .mov files for that day.

Same here. Just wish there was a page on the Web Admin to manage my feeds while on the road.

I am not plan on adding any web administration to BTV Podcatacher right now.

But you might want to look at installing VNC to be able to remote control your PC while on the road this way you can make any changes to your feeds while you are away. (I use RealVNC Professional which does cost some $$ but does have encrpted connections but you might be able to use TightVNC or UltraVNC which is free if you do not want to pay)

Then if you are on road you can use the viewer to to access you computer RealVNC has a exe file that you can run that does not require insatlling also RealVNC has a java web application if you can not run the EXE. If you are really in a bind and you are using IE then you can use WebVNC which uses activeX to access the server.

Also you can look for vnc viewers for most operating systems, they even have one for the jailbroken IPhones.

I too use RealVNC (the free version) quite a lot, along with Hamachi (the basic, free version) to create the VPN connection. With this setup, all of my VNC (or Remote Desktop) traffic goes over the encrypted VPN connection. The performance is surpisingly good.

BigBill
07-20-2008, 09:02 AM
When I've tried to run VNC on my BTV machine I had some odd issues with playback, I had to uninstall it to make them go away. So I stick with the built in RDP, it just seems to work, the only issue is you have to logon again when playing on the TV again. RDP seems to require a password when logging on. I have also tried the free version of Logmein.com's remote control, it works but is a little slow but does away with the VPN requirement.

Crap. Podcatcher went nuts last night and downloaded 5 GB of data.

I do love the addon but I have a couple of suggestions.

1. update the first post. I see the file there is much older then the one a couple pages back. I don't know what one I had. I know I've updated it since the first one but I'm not sure if I was using the newest one.

2. put version numbers in your zip name. It would make it simpler.

3. keep a record of file names that podcatcher has already downloaded so they are not downloaded again automatically by podcatcher of something screws up with the feed. This would prevent what happened to me last night.

I think its a feed issue. My feeds are unreachable right now. I can't reach them manually either. I don't know how you determine if something is new but I think if the feed screws up then podcatcher gets confused and downloads everything thinking its new content.

The feeds I'm currently using are

http://feeds.feedburner.com/cnet/top5
http://revision3.com/tekzilla/feed/xvid-large
http://revision3.com/scamschool/feed/xvid-large/

Its the two revision3 ones that podcatcher went nuts on. The cnet one is fine.

I have had periodic problems with the revision3 feed "download spam" moments as well. Podcatcher provides several means to handle new posts. For Revision3 feeds, setting the Download Based On option for a feed to "Date is new than last items date" (sic) seems to work best to minimize the "download spam" moments. It's not perfect because I think if you watch the most recent download, delete it, then restart podcatcher or reboot or something, podcatcher might re download some of the newer items in the feed again since the "last item" would be the next oldest item. I'm not sure about this side effect (it's a guess).

The version of podcatcher I have is 2.2.976.12. I think that is the latest version. I agree that it would be better to have the latest version pointed to by the first post.

Cal

I will try that. If I'm reading your suggestion right, then I should always keep the last podcast on my hard drive if using that option so that Podcatcher knows what the latest download was.

If that does the trick then I can do that. I'll turn it back on and set it that way and see what happens.

1. update the first post. I see the file there is much older then the one a couple pages back. I don't know what one I had. I know I've updated it since the first one but I'm not sure if I was using the newest one.

I can not update the first post my self because this post is created and maintained by the people at snapstream who administrator the plug ins. I can send them an official release but have not done that yet because there a couple of thing that are not finished in the product (mainly the help which I have to reconstruct because the sources file were only on a laptop whose hard drive went bad and a couple of other clean up with the download manager )

2. put version numbers in your zip name. It would make it simpler.

The installer has a version as a part of the file information. (right click on the msi file then on the summary tab the reversion number currently it is {09F9D380-BA50-4119-8FD7-4281318AEA17} (this is a Microsoft created number that has to changes with each release)

There is also a version info as a part of all of the exe and dll files that are installed. right click on a file and in the details or version tab is the file version currently the main exe is 2.3.976.12

you can also get the version info from inside the program (go to help - then click on about (or you can press Ctrl-A)) currently it is 2.3.976.12

With all of this version I was trying not to make it a part of the file name because this would have to be a manual process and be something that I would forget to do.

I have added to my signature a link to the most recent version of the program

3. keep a record of file names that podcatcher has already downloaded so they are not downloaded again automatically by podcatcher of something screws up with the feed. This would prevent what happened to me last night.

this was done in version 2. look at the download based on option in the feed setup

Your main problem with the program downloading all the shows over is actually more of a problem with the feed provider. I think what happened is they remove the shows that were downloaded from the feed. then your btv podcatcher updated and saw the show removed so it removed the show from its memory to save space on the hard drive and in the file that holds the feed information. The feed then re added the shows. Then btv podcatcher updated and saw the show noticed it was not found in the feed file then it process that show as new and it might downloaded it based on the feed setup.

Here are Several feed options to look at when setting up or modifying a feed in the feed setup form to prevent this from occuring

Remove items when not found in the feed refresh: when this is set to yes it will not remove a show information when a feed is updated and the show is not found on the feed. Setting this to no would have not removed the old shows from the file that has the feed information and the feed

maximum number download to this setting tell the program at the time of refreshing the feed how many show from that feed it can download at a time if this was set to 5 instead of downloading all of the episodes from the feed it would have only gotten the 5 of them.

Here what I would do in the mean time till you get the next version that may or may not fix this issue (see note at end of this post)

I would leave my download based on option alone (most of mine are set to GUID but a couple of feeds that act up regular I do set based on file name (ask a ninja is one of those feed))
I then set the maximum number download to be a relevant number (most of mine are set between 3 to 7 depending on the feeds release schedule)
then I would change the Remove items when not found in the feed refresh to no.

An update I am working on for the program will notice if the program does not see any show on the feed during a refresh it will always leave all the old show on the feed. As I do not have the feed at the each time of refresh I can not confirm this will fix the issue but it might help

In respect to your comment about conserving disk space for the feed information data, how about adding options to the general program settings to never download items in feed older than XX days ago and/or purging old feed items from the local feed information file after XX days as well?

Thanks for letting me know I will take a look at it but since I have yet to move to windows 7 on any systems it will take me some time to set up a test environment for this. in the mean time can you tell me any more information about the crash.

Also did you do a clean install of windows 7 or an upgrade install of windows 7.
if you did an upgrade of windows 7 you might try uninstalling BTV Podcatcher then reinstalling BTV Podcatcher

Just did a clean install of windows 7 in a virtual machine and ran the setup program that i had linked in my signature. then I started BTV Podcatcher and everything ran just fine.
I then added a feed and then I manual download an episode and then the wrote out BTV description info successfully.

Everything looks to be working fine in Windows 7

Here is my recommendation to you

first try reinstalling BTV Podcatcher (I do not think that is the problem but it will make sure all of the program files are there properly)

if that does not work I would try uninstalling .net (all versions) and then re installing .net (version 2.0 is what BTV Podcatcher was written for but it will work in both 3.0 and 3.5 [I have not installed 4.0 on any machines yet to test it still in beta])

Also a recommendation is to always do a clean operating install when installing a new Operating System (OS) as this will not leave residual OS files that might create extra issues with incompatibilities between the 2 OS

mobile_bob

It must be my install of Windows 7 has something wrong. I uninstalled BTV Podcatcher and reinstalled it, but it still crashes. Then I uninstalled .net and reinstalled then uninstalled podcatcher again and reinstalled... Still no go... It crashes as soon as I launch it. If it's working for you it must be something with my install. I did do an upgrade from vista (More just to see if it would), and the upgrade worked beautifully minus this problem of course. One day I will do a fresh install of win7 and try that. I'm probably going to wait for the next big launch of BTV (Which I hope will officialy support windows 7).

Thanks for checking it for me! I really do love your software, keep up the good work!

I like podcatcher and it continues to be handy way to get video podcasts loaded into BTV for viewing.

I have hit a few issues I would like to report.

First, sometimes I will find that podcatcher has popped up a dialog box with an error message that reads 'No file to download' or something similar. I'm going by memory. While this popup is visible, it seems that podcatcher is 'stuck' and won't continue until I close the error popup. I think the cause of the error is sites that update their RSS feed before the media file is available, or they pull the media file because it is broken and they put it back later. Unfortunately this error message does not reference the feed that caused the error in the first place. I think would be a better if podcatcher was unable to down the file due to it not being available on the server at the time to just leave that RSS item as 'new' and try to get the file again on the next RSS feed polling interval.

The other issue I have found is that certain feeds seem to have a mix of media files. Obviously with BTV and podcatcher I am interested in video files from the podcast that BTV can actually play. The one feed I have found with a random assortment of media files will sometimes have PDF files (or no files at all) with the RSS feed updates. Podcatcher will download the PDF file and try to input its info into BTV which BTV of course doesn't know what to do with. It doesn't necessarily crash BTV, but it ends up with junk items in the list of recordings plus I have to manually remove the PDF files from the directory where podcatcher drops them along with the video files from other feeds. I think it would be better for 'mixed media' type feeds if podcatcher simply skipped RSS entry media files that were not video files that BTV can actually play.

An feed that provides 'mixed media' files is; MAKE Magazine: MAKE Podcast (http://blog.makezine.com/archive/make_podcast/index.xml)

I haven't played with this much recently and I reinstalled the latest version and I have a question with automatic downloading. When I added a new feed, should it automatically download all the videos it finds in the feed or does it only start automatically downloading once a new video is found in the list? Do I have to manually download all the videos if I want once I add a new feed?

mpp_mpp

It will only automatically download new videos that are posted after the feed has been added.

You will need to manually download all past videos if you would them

You should be able to download a lot of items in a couple clicks
1) open up the feed viewer from the application
2) select the feed you want download items from the drop down
3) use you mouse to click and drag in the top data grid this will highlight /select multiple item in the grid
4) click the download current feed items button which will download all of the highlight items in the grid

http://www.hd-trailers.net comes close, but their feed doesn't work.. surprised. I tried http://feeds.hd-trailers.net/hd-trailers/1080p and it pulls metadata but it doesn't pull the .mp4 file.

Looking into it more, their GUID tag isn't correct. I emailed the author. Maybe they can fix it so the GUID points to the MP4 file instead.

That one is close...most of their enclosures are mov.

That got me thinking... I am not sure if this program is looking at the <enclosure> tag for each item. That's where the video file is in all the feeds I look, not always the GUID. Wonder if the author still reads these.. and this is one of those times I wish I had the source!

And you're correct; they are mostly MOVs since coming from Apple. I can fix that with ffdshow. I'd build it into the program if I had access to and if the download was a MOV, I'd just run the converter.

Well, maybe I'll just fix my Trailer program! ffmpeg.exe can strip the MOV container to reveal an MP4 which BTV can play.

Yes I am still around still using both BTV and BTV Podcatcher.

Yes I wrote it for any rss format so it downloads the files only when they are in the enclosere tag

in fact I wrote so it is compatible with most rss standards (1.0 and 0.91 do not include a GUID tag as a part of the spec)

As far as the source code for my program goes it is on a computer that I have but is currently turned off, I think

Oh that's wonderful to here. I was just assuming you use the GUID for looking for the video and not the enclosure tag because when I look at the Feed Viewer, you show the GUID label there. If you use the enclosure tag, that is great.

Really, it just comes down to the RSS feeds available. It's nearly impossible to find a movie trailers feed with mp4 files and not Quicktime wrapped files.

I do show the enclosure tab but I label it Download URL on the feed viewer. ( I figured most people would not know what enclosure was)

and as you probably can see the program only downloads files that are playable in BTV .mpg, .mpeg, .mp3, .avi (.divx is translated to avi on save), .mp4 and .mkv (i might be missing one but as I do not have the source code in front of me right now i am doing this from memory of a couple of years ago.

If you are using an older version it might download all files.

Turns out the feed, http://feeds.hd-trailers.net/hd-trailers/720p does work but because the enclosures are not always a .mp4 file, they don't download. So your program does work properly, it's just the feed problem.

If you have the time, would you see if you could add .mov file support and make a special action that converts to .mp4 for those when it downloads? This is the code I figured that can do that conversion rather quickly with ffmpeg.exe and C#:

// Convert using ffmpeg to mp4
string ffmpegPath = Application.StartupPath + "\\ffmpeg.exe";
string ffmpegParams = " -y -i \"" + movFile + "\" -vcodec copy -acodec copy \"" + mp4File + "\"";
if (verbose) {
SetStatus(statusWindow, ffmpegPath);
SetStatus(statusWindow, ffmpegParams);
}
Process ffmpeg = new Process();
ffmpeg.StartInfo.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden;
ffmpeg.StartInfo.FileName = ffmpegPath;
ffmpeg.StartInfo.Arguments = ffmpegParams;
ffmpeg.Start();
ffmpeg.WaitForExit();
System.IO.File.Delete(@movFile);
if (verbose)
SetStatus(statusWindow, "Conversion Completed");

I can relate. No worries! Thanks for a great program.

If you do find the source, and want to zip it up and I can take a peek, that would be fine too.

Nice to see your still around.

I've been using this app since you first posted it. I had a motherboard die and had to build a new BTV box.

Where can I find the current ver of BTV Podcatcher? I looked back a few pages and see references to newer versions, but no attachments. Your sig link gives me a 404 error.

The last one I found so far is from June 2007. I'm sure that is not current.

I'm not looking for any updates to the app. I was not having any issues with it. I just can't find it.

Hopefully you see this in the next few days. I'll be out of town for a couple days myself.

Thanks.

I'm back. Ah. Got it, thank you very much. That works. I installed it and copied over the old config and feed info files and it picked up where it left off.

Thank you.

I didn't install the latest release yet... but if I'm following correctly this will now download .mov files even though BTV won't play them?

No it will not yet download .mov files. There has been talk I am think about adding it into the program but with my current work schedule I will not look at adding anything until probability 3/24

My recent post last week was not an update, just a re post of the current version since the forums no longer had the current version (2.3.976.13) available I uploaded it to another location

I was going to look into it since I have a quick method for tripping the mov containers from mp4 files but we'll see.. i'm super busy with work lately.
