I've done quite a bit of searching for a tool that will compress an HD TS or MPG into a divx of reasonable size and retain AC3 sound. I'd really like to take the file and compress it down to 700 MB/hr or so. I know this can be done because you see the pirates put out DVD rips that have this.

The only program that I've found that says that it can do it is AutoGK. Every time that I try to run it (with a setting that retains AC3) I end up with a BSOD and my machine reboots. I think I might just have to tweak the AC3Filter settings, but I'm not sure.

Are there any other programs? I'm not opposed to spending money...I just want something that works.

You can give Dr. DivX a try.

It's even free!

I am a big fan of avi.NET, freeware, retains AC3, dial in target file size, xvid or divx, runs in background at low priority and allows you to set up batch jobs to run overnight. About 1.75 hr/hr on my o'clocked X2-4xxx so maybe 1:1 on your Conroe. http://www.clonead.co.uk/

The interface gives a lot more information than either Dr Divx or Divx Converter

Thanks BB. I recall you recommending it to someone else once but didn't know that it did AC3. I'm trying it out on last week's Heroes right now.

mlomker, post back your results. I'm curious about that also.

avi.net worked great on my first test. I'm going to do a batch overnight.
