View Full Version : Jumbo Frame Usage

I just recently got a Infrant Tech NAS and people over at there website always seemed to talk about Jumbo Frames, so I decided to do some research. Basically network Data Packets or MTU is typically set at 1500 and Jumbo Frames is typically at 9000, so the benefit is you can send roughly 6 times more data in a single Frame or Packet without the extra overhead. I noticed my BTV Server had this capability and so did my NAS, but not all Switches or Routers do. I had to buy a new Switch (D-Link 10/100/1000 DGS-2208) for $70 but the results are amazing. It originally took me 12 mins to copy a HD show from the Server to the NAS and now with this feature it takes the same file less than 7 mins.

With the huge amounts of data we are using nowadays I thought this may be of use to some people, I know it was new to me about 2 weeks ago.

Thanks
Mike

I assume all you did was enable jumbo frames in the driver, right? I've been thinking about it, all my computers and switches are gigabit and all EXCEPT my BTV box support jumbo frames...... I would have to get a new NIC, I just haven't been able to justify the expense or using up another PCI slot when it has a perfectly good (though without jumbo frame support) built in gigabit NIC.

Yes, I just enabled them (In the hardware section) and bought the new switch and it works great. Just make sure your switch supports it cause most do not.

I have the X6 ready Nas, but my switches don't support Jumbo. None of my computers have 1000. Don't want to spend the money just yet.

7min that's great!

I think Jumbo Frames can be enabled on a 100 connection, you may want to check. Every little bit helps.

BTW I have the NV+

I've did a search and didn't really find Jumbo for 100 Mbps. I did find that Jumbo and non-Jumbo may not play nice together: http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2002-April/006940.html

I guess, I can see if I can increase my MTU. Not sure what the limit is for most.

In reading these articles, I need to read them more than once. I think it's writing in another language :winkwink:

Anyway, if you are transferring large amounts of data, then Jumbo frames are great. If not, I don't think it matters.

I have to say I have seen that firsthand, when I first tried the test I forgot to enable Jumbo Frames on my server and it took 22 mins for the HD File transfer.
