View Full Version : VMR Image Tearing - Ever resolved?

So I am as of now running the latest of everything possible:

- Nvidida Drivers 81.94
- Pure video 1.02-185
- BTV 4.0
- Quartz.dll 6.5.1.902
- Monitor refresh: 60Hz

Any VMR9 settings I try results in extremely bad image tearing across the top of the screen.

Playback it non-btv players on the same recording file doesn't exhibit the issue.

I have also tried forcing vsync in the nvidia drivers and I tried exclusive full screen mode via "BTVD3DShell.exe /displaymode:exclusivefs" and it didn't seem to change anything.

I know alot of people have had this same problem, but searching didn't run up a viable solution so far as I could find. Any suggestion?

I'm having the same issues. I updated everything last night and I'm getting the tearing also. I did the 9.0b fix with the one linked in the forums (don't know the exact build I'll have to check it tonight.

Well I'll submit an official bug report.

I suggest others do the same.

I have no tearing.

Ex. Fullscreen, HW deinterlace, quartz.dll 9.0b, FX5200, Nvidia Decoder, Forceware 81.89.

Haven't for a year now.

So you did have tearing and now you don't?

Is there anything specific that you did?

I have seen this problem on the forums consistenly for years and no one has come up reliable fix such that I can tell.

I'm not sure that there is a "fix" as it seems up in the air if there is anything wrong, particularly with BTV.

Like Bilar, I have almost the exact same setup:
Ex. Fullscreen, HW deinterlace, quartz.dll 9.0b, 6600GT, Nvidia Decoder, Forceware 81.89.

Everything is smooth as silk. Tickers scroll smoothly. No choppiness/tearing during camera pans.

I can playback the same exact files in numerous other media players and I notice none of the tearing I get with BTV. I think that points a pretty big finger at BTV being the culprit.

Well I dunno I guess. I can play EVERY file in BTV flawlessly, and you and I and everyone else have the same BTV code on our systems. The only tanglible difference is the setup our respective computer systems, something SS hardly controls.

I there a problem with BTV? I can't say for sure but I do know that there are way too many people with BTV/Nvidia/PureVideo that are unable to get smooth playback.

Many people are reporting that they are getting smooth playback using Nvidia/PureVideo and OTHER programs so that begs the question "what's up with BTV"

On the other hand others are reporting that they get perfect playback with BTV using 6600's and 6600GT's.

For everyone's sake I hope it is a matter of settings and tweaks but no one seems to know exactly what that is just yet.

Here's what I have tried so far:
Multiple versions of Nvidia drivers
Multiple versions of PureVideo
Tweaked PureVideo Settings
Tried SnapstreamDecoders
Applied Quartz.dll fix
Applied CustomSettings.xml fix
Uninstalled and re-installed

Still i cannot get a smooth picture. But here's what I have identified. I get a perfect picture if the source material is 720p. If the source is 1080i then I gett studders. Of course all the shows I watch are 1080i.

I do hope the Snapstream developers are working on identifying what the problem is.

I have lived BTV and fixes for about 3 days so if I ever get a good picture I plan on compiling every fix that's beed posted into one guide.

I think this thread and this one:
http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-27948.html
and this one:
http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-27881.html
are all the same issue.

BTV definately does have a role in the 1080i image issues, I have them too.

If I use the ATI application and watch 1080i content I do not see the tearing. So unless there is another uncommon component introducing this problem I can't help but conclude it's within BTV. The interesting thing to me is that my TV is native 1080i, and the 720p content is by far the best (which is opposite of what I see in the ATI DTV application).

I'd like to hear from a SS person on this to get a hint at what the issue is and how hard it is/long it might take to fix.

Well the only way you'll hear from SS is to log an official support ticket. (FAQ Forum Rule #3). The more people who log tickets, the better off you'll all be.

Good suggestion, I will log a ticket tonight when I can attach a log file.

The trick for me was simply to use exclusive fullscreen mode. If that's not working for you, I would make doubly sure you have the correct command line parameter to start in Ex. F/S mode:

--------------------------------------------------

"C:\Program Files\SnapStream Media\Beyond TV\BTVD3DShell.exe" /displaymode:exclusivefs

--------------------------------------------------

I really do not believe that tearing is a BTV issue. In fact, BTV's main competitor, who shall rename mainless, also tears in VMR mode. I've heard that they've recently employed ex. f/s mode, so that may have changed things. Microsoft readily acknowledges that VMR9 must be used in conjunction with Ex. F/S mode for tear-free video.

Up until recent builds, ZoomPlayer was also tearing in VMR9. It's still not perfect.

I'm not even sure if you can enable VMR9 rendering in WMP, so I don't see how a direct comparison between BTV playback and WMP can be made.

"C:\Program Files\SnapStream Media\Beyond TV\BTVD3DShell.exe" /displaymode:exclusivefs

I double checked my settings and indeed was missing the last "s" on exclusive fs, doh!

That fixed about 80% of the tearing. I also went into the Nvidia control panel and created profile for the BTVD3DShell.exe application and set it to force vsync. With this combination I feel about 95% of the tearing is gone :loved: :loved: :loved:

Good going! Now make sure your Nvidia decoder is set to automatic, and set your Nvidia display control panel 3D settings quality slider to "High Quality"...not just "Quality". For me, "Quality" tears a bit, and "Performance" really stinks.

I am actually thinking of reverting back to Overlay.

I have been having problems with the GUI locking up alot when there is any Pause/Play/Rwd/Ffwd key presses. At least with Non-FS mode I could just cntrl-alt-del and kill teh BTV shell process. In Exclusive FS mode I can't get the task manager up :(

Very frustrating
