View Full Version : Lots of RAM and Processor usage

I heard that the latest WinTV PVR250 cards lowered the processor ram and processor. I am disappointed that during viewing WTLPVSApp.exe uses 79,300K Ram and 50% Processor and SSBatchProcessor uses 22,088K ram and the PVSLogService uses 3,436 K . So over 100MB of my 512MB Ram is dedicated to this app and 50% of the processor usage. I also get a bunch of sound and video drops during email checking or clicking on a web link.
I read on another thread that someone got theirs down to less than 20% -- how???!!
Running P4 2.0 512MB Ram and WinTVPVR 250, ATI 9600 Pro.
Any suggestions?

when you say viewing, i'm imagining you mean watching live tv or playing back a recorded show. If this is the case, then yes, indeed, it will be higher than 20 percent. The reason is that it takes processing cycles to read the data from the hard drive, decode the data (since it is encoded in some format other than raw video), and then properly render it onto your choice of display.
Now, if you said all you were doing was recording at the time, then the pvr 250 can get your cpu utilization down to even 2 percent while recording, depending on your CPU power.
Myself, i have the same cpu running not only BTV3, but 2 websites, a MySQL server, a teamspeak server, an ftp server, my email server, my email virus firewall, and is my domain controller. On top of that, i have the server running anti-virus 24/7. I also have security up the wazoo to prevent hacking.
So, suggestion follows simple logic. BTV is a hog, and deserves to be so with all that is going on. However, you can prevent the skipping by increasing the task priority in Task Manager. Usually, it is set to 'normal'. You can increase it to 'High' with no side effects to any other application. Now, which process you need to increase depends solely on your version of BTV.

Hey thanks! Such a simple setting, but I overlooked it. I'll give it a try when I get home and let you know what happens. If you are running all of that, then I should be able to view a website without the darn thing skipping out on me. :)

Hey one more question. If I change the priority of the task in task manager, does it "stick" or do I have to reset it every time I reboot my computer?

It doesn't stick unfortunately.

50% cpu still seems high for your system. My old 1.2 ghz athlon hovered around 30% cpu when watching and my new p4 3.2 ghz is usually under 10%. What vido decoder are you using? if you're using the default, definately change that.. i'd recommend nvidia decoder or intervideo. Also, I have set my deinterlacing to hardware which i know works well with the 9600 pro and that reduces cpu time.

Hmmm your post made me take a look. In Task Manager my CPU is showing 100% I am no longer dropping frames or anything, but that is still high huh? I tried the intervideo and the hardware deinterlacing, but the deinterlacing makes my picture look grainy.
It almost seems like I'm getting a false positive on the processor though. Wouldn't things be slow? Wouldn't my page file be thrashing? Page file is at 384MB and everything is running extremely well.
any ideas?
