View Full Version : help! Firefly installation not working
 I just got my Firefly remote and tried to install the included software (drivers + BM Basic). The installation program fails EVERY time. All I get is a "Setup.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services" error dialog, with the worthless error "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled."
Has anyone seen this or have any ideas? I have BTV 1334 build installed, and haven't tried removing that at all, but if that conflicts than SS has a bigger problem than just me. I have uninstalled BM twice and retried it, once I even found and deleted the "program files\common files\snapstream\" folder as I also got an error related to the service X10nets.exe
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm dying to have a remote for BTV!
No, I'm afraid I use nVidia + no remote currently, so this isn't an ATI issue. I appreciate the suggestion, though.

once I even found and deleted the "program files\common files\snapstream\" folder as I also got an error related to the service X10nets.exeIf you deleted the commons folder I am pretty sure you will need to reinstall BTV, it likely uses some of those files. You can backup your settings for btv by copying the xml files located in c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\snapstream (this folder is hidden so just type it in)
When you go around deleting files outside of the installer you can pretty much toast the system. i would suggest backing up the xml files and doing a fresh install of BTV then a fresh install of FireFly. Also if the error generated indicates any kind of file that is the source of the problem (aside from x10nets.exe) please note that as well...

I agree, but I will say that I just installed BTV on a second computer (to compare, don't worry I will be removing it immediately) and nothing is installed to the "common files" folder for BTV. Installing Firefly is the only time anything is put there. Oh, and just for kicks I did do a partial uninstall (remove everything but config) and re-install, and still no Firefly. BTV still works fine, though.
As for details on the error, the only file or line number or debuggable info at ALL included in the dialog is the executable Setup.exe (as I previously described). It does list task IDs, which I suppose I could have compared to my task manager (I'll try that when I get home), but no other file names.
I think maybe I was a little misled by my error... It seems that the install is completing fine, but the firefly SETUP utility (read: configuration) is what is failing. Everything else appears to be in the right spot (files/shortcuts/reg entries/etc.). I just can't RUN the program because the configuration fails...
I checked the process ID and it matched up to Setup.exe, as I suspected.
Here's the error dialog that I get...
Well, I managed to resolve my issue on my own. I did some web searching and some fiddling, and decided to uninstall/remove Microsoft .Net completely and re-install it. I don't know if it was setup wrong, improperly updated, or what, but that made the difference. I know I had the latest from windowsupdate.microsoft.com, but maybe it didn't install correctly... Who knows.
Anyway, my problem is solved. Now onto enjoying my FireFly. :D

This issue just popped up for me. I had to rip out all of the .net services installed and then reinstall them. Everything worked fine after that. Obviously there is still an issue.
