Well actually I just installed a newer, state of the art BTV based dvr this past March. The old one actually had been running 24/7, 365 for 5 years and 10 months. Only shut off to replace two failed components, and to add new hardware. Maybe a total of 6 or 8 times in 6 years.
But truth be told, on the rare occurrence when I did have to actually shut down the HTPC, I always had this nagging worry that it would never start up again.  But my fears were unfounded. Whew!
I had to build a new HTPC, primarily because it was still running 6 year old technology and as BTV evolved to include new things like digital recordings, HD, h.264 and other features like multiple simultaneous showsqueezes, smartchapter generation, and DVD recording, the 6-year old single core Athlon just couldn't keep up.
