Which version of Windows? Which video card?

I recently upgraded my nVidia video drivers to version 185.85 on Vista and got a similar result to yours. It happened on two PC's. I had to boot into safe mode and uninstall the drivers, then reinstall version 182.08. It's still available from nVidia. Microsoft update tries to install the version that caused problems. I will wait until the next new release then try upgrading again.
