One thing that helps blast through recordings is "fast play", which I use
The Kmplayer for. I routinely watch newscasts & documentaries at 150-175% normal speed. Pitch adjustment keeps the audio from sounding like chipmunks. A few other players offer similar ability, but I've found none as good as The Kmplayer.
