Well that's a different story. Firewire should be fine for that, USB may or may not be.
I've two external USB drives. One I can sustain about 20MB/s but the other coughs and sputters and only does about 5MB/s.
If you are building something, I would look for a drive enclosure with eSATA only (not eSATA + USB)
